Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Wichita KS
256 AM CST Wed Mar 4 2020

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday night)
Issued at 253 AM CST Wed Mar 4 2020

A subtle frontal boundary will bring light northerly winds to much
of the area early in the period however return flow is expected to
quickly build eastward across the forecast area during the afternoon
and evening hours. The end result is expected to be very similar to
yesterday with most locations seeing highs in the low 60s. Some high
clouds may shave a degree or two off from yesterday's highs across
extreme southern KS but values were trended upward from the previous
forecast.

Thu-Fri...A frontal boundary will shift winds to the north late
tonight and into the day on Thursday. Gusty north winds of 15 to 25
knots and an intrusion of much drier air will result in a very high
grassland fire danger across much of the area on Thursday afternoon.
Temperatures are expected to remain above normal ranging from the
upper 50s to mid 60s. High pressure will quickly build in by early
evening bringing light and variable winds and strong radiational
cooling on Thu night. Low level southerly flow will return on Friday
with rising heights/increasing thickness and rising temperatures.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Tuesday)
Issued at 253 AM CST Wed Mar 4 2020

Breezy southerly winds and above normal temperatures will prevail
over the weekend with highs in the 60s and 70s and lows in the
40s. A shortwave trough is progged to lift out of the Southern
Rockies and into the Central Plains late Sunday into Monday
bringing increasing chances for showers and storms. Cooler air
will be driven southward across the area in the wake of this
system with near normal temperatures anticipated on Tue.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday night)
Issued at 1056 PM CST Tue Mar 3 2020

Latest satellite imagery and surface observations continue to
reflect mostly clear skies and weak southerly winds. These winds
will switch around to become more northerly overnight. As the
previous discussions mentioned, a transient area of marginal low-
level wind shear will also be possible overnight. Though a few
high clouds may linger across portions of the area tomorrow, VFR
flight conditions will persist throughout the forecast period.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 253 AM CST Wed Mar 4 2020

Very high fire grassland fire danger may develop across much of the
area on Thursday afternoon as breezy north winds combine with drier
air. Meanwhile southerly winds will increase even more late in the
week and into the upcoming weekend with very high grassland fire
danger continuing for many areas.
