National Weather Service Des Moines IA
501 PM CDT Thu Aug 11 2016

Showers and thunderstorms began across northern Iowa during the
Thursday mid afternoon hours. The storms were slowly moving to the
northeast and began building southward towards highway 30. Further
south, sunshine contributed to yet another afternoon of hot and
humid temperatures. With highs reaching the upper 80s to low 90s
and heat index values well into the 70s, heat index values
reached the 100 degree mark, with some locations experiencing heat
index values near 105 degrees. Thursday afternoon winds were from
the south at around 10 to 15 mph.

There is high confidence for heavy rainfall Thursday night into
Friday morning across portions of Iowa. Locations along and north
of Highway 20 could see several inches of rainfall overnight.
Around 1 to 2 inches of rain is likely from the Des Moines metro
through highway 30. Southern Iowa should see around half an inch
to one inch of rain.

After this system passes by Friday afternoon, cooler and drier
weather is expected as Canadian high pressure builds into the
upper midwest. Highs across the region will be back into the 80s,
with lows in the mid 50s to low 60s.
