The storms were slowly moving to the northeast and began building southward towards highway 30. Further south, sunshine contributed to yet another afternoon of hot and humid temperatures. With highs reaching the upper 80s to low 90s and heat index values well into the 70s, heat index values reached the 100 degree mark, with some locations experiencing heat index values near 105 degrees. Thursday afternoon winds were from the south at around 10 to 15 mph. There is high confidence for heavy rainfall Thursday night into Friday morning across portions of Iowa. Locations along and north of Highway 20 could see several inches of rainfall overnight. Around 1 to 2 inches of rain is likely from the Des Moines metro through highway 30. Southern Iowa should see around half an inch to one inch of rain. After this system passes by Friday afternoon, cooler and drier weather is expected as Canadian high pressure builds into the upper midwest.
