the north side of the city of St Louis it expanded to 1 mile wide,
damaging or destroying thousands of buildings in the city as it
reached its peak intensity. The tornado weakened and narrowed as
it crossed the Mississippi River into Illinois where it produced
primarily sporadic tree damage and occasional damage to roofs and
structures in Granite City and Pontoon Beach. It finally lifted
just east of the Southern Illinois University campus in
Edwardsville. This tornado tracked for nearly 23 miles in 25
minutes, at an average speed of 55 mph. It is possible that
multiple tornadic circulations were involved, and future analysis
