Rating: EF3 Estimated Peak Wind: 152 mph Path Length /statute/: 22.77 miles Path Width /maximum/: 1750 yards Fatalities: 5 Injuries: 38 Start Date: 05/16/2025 Start Time: 02:41 PM CDT Start Location: Richmond Heights / St. Louis County / MO Start Lat/Lon: 38.6326 / -90.3344 End Date: 05/16/2025 End Time: 03:06 PM CDT End Location: Edwardsville / Madison County / IL End Lat/Lon: 38.7971 / -89.9733 Survey Summary: The tornado began near Clayton and tracked through portions of the Washington University Campus and Forest Park. As it moved through the north side of the city of St Louis it expanded to 1 mile wide, damaging or destroying thousands of buildings in the city as it reached its peak intensity. The tornado weakened and narrowed as it crossed the Mississippi River into Illinois where it produced primarily sporadic tree damage and occasional damage to roofs and structures in Granite City and Pontoon Beach. It finally lifted just east of the Southern Illinois University campus in Edwardsville. This tornado tracked for nearly 23 miles in 25 minutes, at an average speed of 55 mph. It is possible that multiple tornadic circulations were involved, and future analysis may adjust these statistics. ...Des Arc Tornado... Rating: EF2 Estimated Peak Wind: 115 mph Path Length /statute/: 3.26 miles Path Width /maximum/: 150 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 05/16/2025 Start Time: 02:53 PM CDT Start Location: 1 WSW Des Arc / Iron County / MO Start Lat/Lon: 37.275 / -90.6608 End Date: 05/16/2025 End Time: 02:56 PM CDT End Location: 2 NE Des Arc / Iron County / MO End Lat/Lon: 37.2968 / -90.6082 Survey Summary: A tornado touched down near Des Arc and tracked through the town. Some buildings damaged by this tornado had already been damaged by a prior tornado on March 14 of this year. Multiple witnesses observed the tornado as it approached and moved through the town. While the path is at least 3.25 miles long, it may have continued further east as well.
