...NWS Damage Survey for 12/28/24 - 12/29/24 Tornado Event -
Update #4...

.Update... Two additional tornadoes have been confirmed after
additional storm survey work on Thursday in Greene, Hale, and
Chilton Counties. This brings the total number of confirmed
tornadoes in the NWS Birmingham forecast area to 18. Additionally,
updates were made to tornadoes in Lowndes, Montgomery, and Macon
Counties. Based on new damage reports, the Hargrove Lane tornado
was raised to 75 mph, extended through the Rolling Acres
neighborhood to just across the county line in Montgomery County,
and renamed the Rolling Acres tornado. The Hope Hull tornado has
been raised to 110 mph after further analysis of damaged
warehouses near I-65. The County Road 8 tornado in Macon County
was lowered from 85 mph to 75 mph.

.Overview... On Saturday, December 28, 2024, a strong storm
system impacted much of the Lower Mississippi and Tennessee River
Valleys with strong to severe thunderstorms. Many of these storms
produced damaging wind gusts, tornadoes, and even isolated
flooding. This storm system eventually moved across Central
Alabama Saturday night into early Sunday morning as a quasi-linear
convective system, though a few isolated supercells were
observed. These storms produced damaging wind gusts and tornadoes
across Central Alabama from around 9 PM CST through around 3 AM
CST. Numerous tornadoes, many of them brief, have been documented
along the storm's path across Central Alabama.

were removed from the roof and sides of a farm outbuilding. A few
hundred yards to the north, a well-defined area of significant
tree damage occurred, where many dozen to perhaps hundreds of
pine trees were snapped. These non-contiguous pockets of well-
defined damage suggest the tornado was characterized by multiple
vortices. The tornado widened substantially and maintained its
multiple vortex nature as it continued to the northeast and moved
into Hale County. Pockets of non-contiguous damage were found
along Carnation Road and County Road 17, where the tornado was
nearly one mile wide. Near the intersection of Carnation Road and
Quail Drive, a hay barn was demolished, and at least two
residences sustained uplift and removal of roof covering
materials. Along County Road 17, dozens of trees were snapped and
uprooted. The tornado then made a northward turn as it moved
through the center of Sawyerville, where only very minor damage
was observed along State Highway 14. The tornado increased in
intensity as it turned back to the northeast and continued to

dissipated quickly as it crossed County Road 21 and Rasberry
Road.
