A line of thunderstorms moved across northern Illinois during the evening of Sunday, July 14, producing swaths of damaging winds and several embedded tornadoes. This Public Information Statement provides a summary of the 9 tornadoes that were confirmed in the NWS Chicago forecast area from this event, as well as a summary of the 2 primary corridors of enhanced straight-line wind damage that were identified in the area. A final Public Information Statement with our updated findings from the July 15th severe weather event is tentatively expected to be sent out tomorrow. Tree and crop damage occurred along the path of the tornado, and one outbuilding was destroyed as well. .Elburn Tornado... Rating: EF1 Estimated Peak Wind: 100 mph Path Length /statute/: 9.02 miles Path Width /maximum/: 150 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/14/2024 Start Time: 09:28 PM CDT Start Location: 3 ENE Maple Park / Kane County / IL Start Lat/Lon: 41.9191 / -88.5396 End Date: 07/14/2024 End Time: 09:40 PM CDT End Location: 3 W Geneva / Kane County / IL End Lat/Lon: 41.894 / -88.3746 Survey Summary: This tornado began near the intersection of McNulty Road and Meredith Road, where crop damage was evident in high resolution satellite imagery. The tornado then tracked southeastward through Elburn, downing trees and damaging a few farm buildings and houses. The tornado ended east of Brundige Road and south of State Route 38 after destroying a metal farm building at the Hickory Lane Equestrian Center. .St. Charles Tornado... Rating: EF0 Estimated Peak Wind: 80 mph Path Length /statute/: 0.82 miles Path Width /maximum/: 200 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/14/2024 Start Time: 09:43 PM CDT Start Location: 2 WNW Geneva / Kane County / IL Start Lat/Lon: 41.9041 / -88.3519 End Date: 07/14/2024 End Time: 09:44 PM CDT End Location: 2 NW Geneva / Kane County / IL End Lat/Lon: 41.8988 / -88.3379 Survey Summary: As a surge of strong straight-line winds was entering St. Charles and Geneva, a brief EF-0 tornado spun up just north of Route 38 east of Peck Road. The tornado tracked southeastward to just southeast of the intersection of Randall Road and Route 38, causing roof damage to a Metro Self Storage building, damaging a greenhouse and tossing shopping cart corrals around at a Meijer, knocking over a light pole, and snapping and uprooting multiple trees. Damage beyond the Tri-City Shopping Center then appeared to transition to straight-line wind damage. .La Grange-Cicero Tornado... Damage along the tornado's path was entirely confined to trees. .Midway Airport-Kenwood (Chicago) Tornado... Rating: EF0 Estimated Peak Wind: 85 mph Path Length /statute/: 8.11 miles Path Width /maximum/: 300 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/14/2024 Start Time: 10:33 PM CDT Start Location: 1 NNE Midway Airport / Cook County / IL Start Lat/Lon: 41.79 / -87.7425 End Date: 07/14/2024 End Time: 10:43 PM CDT End Location: 2 N Hyde Park / Cook County / IL End Lat/Lon: 41.8178 / -87.5905 Survey Summary: An EF-0 tornado began at Midway Airport and tracked east- northeastward through the West Elsdon, Gage Park, New City, and Fuller Park community areas of Chicago, where it primarily caused tree and minor roof damage to homes. The tornado then crossed I-90/I-94, producing additional instances of tree damage as it tracked through the Grand Boulevard and Kenwood community areas before it tracked out over Lake Michigan. Just as the tornado was about to spin up, surveillance video at Midway Airport showed strong winds turning a 737 airplane clockwise 90 degrees, causing its left wing to slam into the jet bridge that it was stationed at. .Englewood-Jackson Park (Chicago) Tornado... Rating: EF0 Estimated Peak Wind: 80 mph Path Length /statute/: 3.59 miles Path Width /maximum/: 200 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/14/2024 Start Time: 10:40 PM CDT Start Location: 2 E Englewood / Cook County / IL Start Lat/Lon: 41.768 / -87.634 End Date: 07/14/2024 End Time: 10:44 PM CDT End Location: 1 ESE Hyde Park / Cook County / IL End Lat/Lon: 41.7816 / -87.5672 Survey Summary: An EF-0 tornado began near Englewood STEM High School and tracked east-northeastward through the south side of Chicago before moving over Lake Michigan at Jackson Park. The tornado primarily caused tree damage along its 3.6 mile long track, though it also knocked over a train car and caused some minor roof damage as well. .Leeds-Long Point Tornado... Rating: EFU Estimated Peak Wind: N/A Path Length /statute/: 4.21 miles Path Width /maximum/: 150 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/15/2024 Start Time: 12:02 AM CDT Start Location: 4 ESE Wenona / La Salle County / IL Start Lat/Lon: 41.0292 / -88.9718 End Date: 07/15/2024 End Time: 12:06 AM CDT End Location: 1 N Long Point / Livingston County / IL End Lat/Lon: 41.0224 / -88.8922 Survey Summary: High-resolution satellite imagery indicates that a tornado began near the intersection of N 7th Road and E 10th Road in La Salle County and tracked east-southeastward for about 4.2 miles, causing damage to crops. The damage was most pronounced near the start of the track between E 10th Road and E 11th Road, where a clear and continuous damage path was evident in the crops, with crop damage becoming more sporadic and subtle farther to the east. The last instance of crop damage appeared to occur just west of N 200 East Road and south of E 2800 North Road in Livingston County, just north of Long Point. Because this tornado did not cause damage to any qualified damage indicators, it has been assigned an EF-Unknown (EF-U) rating. .Dana Tornado... The last instance of crop damage appeared to occur just south of E 2400 North Road between N 100 East Road and N 200 East Road in Livingston County. Because this tornado did not cause damage to any qualified damage indicators, it has been assigned an EF-Unknown (EF-U) rating. .Ancona/Long Point Tornado... Rating: EFU Estimated Peak Wind: N/A Path Length /statute/: 1.90 miles Path Width /maximum/: 225 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 07/15/2024 Start Time: 12:06 AM CDT Start Location: 2 N Long Point / Livingston County / IL Start Lat/Lon: 41.0307 / -88.8916 End Date: 07/15/2024 End Time: 12:08 AM CDT End Location: 2 NE Long Point / Livingston County / IL End Lat/Lon: 41.0206 / -88.859 Survey Summary: High-resolution satellite imagery indicates that as the Leeds- Long Point tornado was ending, a new tornado began near the intersection of N 200 East Road and E 2800 North Road north of Long Point and southwest of Ancona. This tornado tracked southeastward for almost 2 miles, carving out a damage path across crops before ending just west of N 400 East Road. .Central DeKalb, Central Kane, and Western DuPage County Straight-Line Winds... Estimated Peak Wind: 90 mph Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 A corridor of strong straight-line winds started near DeKalb and continued through Cortland, Maple Park, Elburn, Lily Lake, Campton Hills, St. Charles, Geneva, West Chicago, and surrounding areas. Damage across this corridor consisted of widespread downed trees, downed power lines, blown down crops, and multiple instances of structural damage. .Southern La Salle and Western and Southern Livingston County Straight-Line Winds... Estimated Peak Wind: 80 mph Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 A corridor of strong straight-line winds began in Marshall County and continued into far southern La Salle and western and southern Livingston counties.
