Start Location: 2 SW Crossett / Ashley County / AR
Start Lat/Lon: 33.1106 / -91.9887

End Date: 06/18/2023
End Time: 03:55 AM CDT
End Location: 1 SSE Wilmot / Ashley County / AR
End Lat/Lon: 33.039 / -91.5682

Survey Summary:
A destructive thunderstorm complex resulted in widespread
damaging winds across Ashley County in the predawn of June 18th,
2023. While much of the county experienced severe wind gusts at
or above 60 mph, a corridor of higher winds in the 70 to 100 mph
range developed along a line extending from near the cities of
Crossett and Hamburg. Maximum estimated wind in these cities was
in the 70 to 90 mph range and most trees sustained some degree of
damage, many were uprooted or snapped with 20-30 homes damaged or
destroyed from falling trees. Some residences and businesses
suffered shingle and roof covering damage. Tree fall resulted in
numerous power line and power pole failures with a tree also
falling on a substation in Hamburg resulting in widespread power
outages. Between Crossett and Hamburg, power transmission towers
of the tubular steel pole variety were collapsed due to intense
crosswind across a large span over an open field and airport.
This area is where the winds likely reached maximum intensity,
estimated to be near 100 mph. Wooden power poles, outbuildings,
and vegetable-bearing plants were seemingly undamaged in the
vicinity, suggesting the winds may have been lower than the
values typically associated with this type of infrastructure
failure and/or that the winds may have been substantially higher
above ground level. These inconsistencies in context preclude an
estimation of winds higher than 100 mph. The damaging wind
complex carried east and southeast toward Wilmot where winds
likely began to weaken below 70 mph. Wind damage, however, was
noted to extend substantially further east (including into Chicot
county) but was not as intense in those areas as in the primary
swath within central Ashley County.
