Rating: EF-3 Estimated Peak Wind: 155 mph Path Length /statute/: 27.7 miles Path Width /maximum/: 0.38 yards Fatalities: 3 Injuries: 8 Start Date: 03/31/2023 Start Time: 8:58 PM CDT Start Location: 2 SW Sainte Marie / Jasper County / IL Start Lat/Lon: 38.9018 / -88.0604 Fatalities: 3 Injuries: 8 End Date: 03/31/2023 End Time: 9:21 PM CDT End Location: 2 NE Palestine / Crawford County / IL End Lat/Lon: 39.0306 / -87.5746 Survey Writeup: The survey team determined that the Robinson Tornado began in eastern Jasper County south of the town, Sainte Marie, along County Highway 16 (E 400th Ave). Initial damage along the path was of the EF0 variety with sporadic tree damage extending northeastward toward the Jasper/Crawford county line. As the tornadic storm crossed into Crawford County, the survey team began to observe damage of the EF1-EF2 variety. Minor structural damage along County Highway 1 (N 200th St) near Pierceburg occurred to a machine shed where its roof structure collapsed. Additionally, numerous wooden power poles were snapped and heavy damage to trees was noted with tops sheared off about 30 feet AGL. Structural damage to homes of the EF1-EF2 variety occurred as the tornadic storm moved northeastward across County Highway 15 (E 700th Ave). There, the survey team observed two single family homes with major roof damage, one of which had a portion of the roof uplifted. There was also a mobile home that was torn in half with its debris strewn about 20 yards in opposite directions. Trees, while sparse in this area, were sheared about 20-30 feet AGL. Further east along county Highway 15 (E 700th Ave), structural damage occurred to a large machine shed where a stationary semi-trailer blew into its west- facing wall causing the entire structure to fail. The debris from the large machine shed then blew into an old, poorly anchored single- family residence and caused exterior walls to slide off its foundation. Over the next 3 miles along the path of the tornadic storm, and just before it reached the south side of Robinson, the survey crew struggled to navigate the road network. This was due to flooding along several creek branches stemming off the Embarras River. In additional to the flooding, we were met by several utility roadblocks between N 700th St and N 1000th St, with the power companies working to restore the electrical infrastructure. Nevertheless, we were able to observe several distant tree lines along the path with trees sheared off 20-30 feet AGL. This, along with supplemental drone footage, was enough for us to determine, despite navigation challenges, that the tornado remained on the ground as it approached Robinson. As the tornadic storm moved into the southside of Robinson, it narrowly missed a major oil refiner. The tornado did destroy two manufactured homes resulting in two fatalities, on in each structure, as it crossed County Highway 9 (N 1100th St) near the interchange of E 900th Ave and N 1200 St. The damage to structures, trees, and wooden power poles on the south side of Robinson was determined to be of the EF1-EF2 variety. Heavy structural damage (EF3 variety) and an additional fatality was then noted on the eastside of Robinson near the interchange of State Highway 1 and E 1050th Ave where a two-story masonry building experienced failure to its top story walls. The adjacent properties also experienced EF2-EF3 damage where the exterior walls of two single-family homes collapsed. The damage to trees and utility poles in this area was extensive due to the amount of debris strewn toward the northeast. Damage from strong RFD winds was likely accompanying the tornado at this point, making it difficult for the survey team to determine the width of the tornado, but the team ultimately estimated that the tornado was about one-third of a mile in width as it exited the eastside of Robinson. The tornadic storm then moved over Robinson Municipal Airport destroying airport hangers and a small outbuilding. The progressive collapse of the rigid frames of the metal building systems, which included steel beams measuring greater than 18 inches in diameter, caused the survey team to estimate EF3 damage at this point. A continuous track of EF1 damage then extended northeastward across County Highway 5 (N 1800th St) where multiple single-family homes exhibited large sections of their roof structure removed. Additionally, multiple large machine sheds experienced a collapse to its wall structures. The survey team concluded that the storm likely maintained its intensity as it tracked northeast toward the Wabash River (i.e. the Illinois/Indiana state line), noting about a quarter-mile wide swath of heavy tree damage to distant tree lines as it continued northeast toward the river. At this time, while preliminary, the survey team concludes the tornado to have been one, continuous path as it extended from eastern Jasper County to the Illinois/Indiana state line, a path length of nearly 28 miles. Much damage along the path reached the EF1 scale level (86-110 mph) with a few pockets where winds reached the EF3 scale level (136-165 mph). At its peak intensity, the estimated width of the tornado was about one-third of a mile wide. NWS Lincoln would like to give special thanks to both the Crawford County EMA (Brad Midgett) and Crawford County Sheriff (William Rutan) for their assistance in performing this survey, as well as their tireless service to their communities. && EF Scale: The Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories: EF0...Weak......65 to 85 mph EF1...Weak......86 to 110 mph EF2...Strong....111 to 135 mph EF3...Strong....136 to 165 mph EF4...Violent...166 to 200 mph EF5...Violent...>200 mph NOTE: The information in this statement is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event and publication in NWS Storm Data. $$
