830 SXUS76 KPQR 112202 RERPQR RECORD EVENT REPORT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OREGON 301 PM PDT TUE APR 12 2022 ...RECORD LATEST SNOWFALL FOR PORTLAND METRO AREA... A rare event occurred in the past 24 hours--April snow. A cold air mass along with the perfect trajectory of a low pressure system, brought heavy wet snow to the extreme corner of northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. Many areas around the Portland/Vancouver metro area received 2 to 4 inches of very wet heavy snow, with heavier amounts over the higher hills above 500 feet elevation. The weight of the snow snapped tree branches and brought many shrubs and bushes down to the ground. Breaking branches also brought down power lines, especially for those on the hills around the metro area. While it is not uncommon to see snow on the higher hills around the region in April, it is indeed very rare to see snow down to the valley floor. For much of the Portland/Vancouver metro area, this is the latest measureable snow in the spring. For PORTLAND AIRPORT (1941-2022), this snow was... ** Most ever in the month of April, with 1.6 inches ** Latest in spring to have more than a Trace of snow (prior record was 0.3 inch on 25 March 1965) ** Only time have had measureable snow in April For DOWNTOWN PORTLAND (1874-2022), this snow was... ** 2nd most snow recorded in April, with 2.0 inches (most was 5.4 inches back on 1 April 1936) ** Latest in spring to have more than a Trace of snow (prior record was 0.1 inch on 10 April 1903) ** Only the 8th time measureable snow fell in April For TROUTDALE (1948-2022), this snow was... ** Most ever in the month of April, with ~3 inches ** Latest in spring to have more than a Trace of snow (prior record was 0.2 inch on 27 March 1950) ** Only time have had measureable snow in April For VANCOUVER AIRPORT (1895-2022), this snow was... ** Most ever in the month of April, with 2-3 inches ** Latest in spring to have more than a Trace of snow (prior record was 0.7 inch on 31 March 1936) ** Only time have had measureable snow in April For HILLSBORO AIRPORT (1929-2022), this snow was... ** Most ever in the month of April, with ~3 inches ** Latest in spring to have more than a Trace of snow (prior record was 2.5 inches on 1 April 1936) ** Only the 2nd time measureable snow fell in April ========================================================= NOTE: Only the Portland Airport and Downtown Portland have onsite snow measurements. The other stations (TROUTDALE, VANCOUVER and HILLSBORO) do not, and snowfall data for those sites were estimated based on nearby storm spotter and public reports. $$ ROCKEY
