Survey Summary:
A tornado briefly touched down near Shorty Poston Rd off of LA-
392 west of Hornbeck. The tornado mostly snapped hardwood and
softwood trees as it crossed the road and then passed over a
single family home. The home sustained shingle damage and a few of
its brick pillars along its porch were damaged. It also damaged a
portion of the roof of a small metal outbuilding before continuing
on to snap several more trees. The tornado then lifted in a
forested area behind the single-family home. A total of
approximately 50 trees were mostly snapped and twisted with a few
uprooted. Winds were estimated at 105 mph based on the snapped
trees. The same storm that produced this tornado went on to
produce an EF-2 tornado in the Peason Community.

Survey Summary:

This strong EF2 tornado began near Peason Road in the Peason
community and traveled approximately 3.6 miles northeast before
lifting shortly after passing over Bridges Road. Radar data
suggests the starting point could have been slightly farther
southwest than what is indicated in the survey and the ending
point could have been slightly farther northeast than what is
indicated in the survey. In both cases the available public
road network limited access to achieve full precision.

Although this tornado was in a rural portion of Sabine
Parish, the impressive maximum width of approximately half a mile
allowed many residences and structures to be affected.
Approximately 30 homes were damaged and approximately 10 to 15
were heavily damaged, destroyed, or rendered unlivable. The
survey suggested the tornado was most intense in a narrower
corridor from Highway 118 to where it crossed McInnis Road. In
this corridor damage indicators on several structures were at
an EF2 level. The peak wind speed of 125 mph was associated
with a completely destroyed mobile home which had its remnants
blown approximately 60 feet and piled up against a tree line. All
of a family of 5 in the mobile home at the time of the tornado
were injured, with a few receiving critical injuries. Another
injury occurred farther downstream from this area, but this
injury was not critical. In addition to damage to residences,
there were scores of farm and outbuildings which were generally
destroyed and the survey team documented casualties of at least
two horses.

This tornado was quite anomalous for its above average width in
relation to its relatively short path length. There were a few
EF2 damage points associated with extreme swaths of tree damage,
although little debarking was seen. This survey team estimates
at least 1000 trees were either snapped or uprooted.

EF Scale: The Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the
following categories:

EF3...Strong....136 to 165 mph
EF4...Violent...166 to 200 mph
EF5...Violent...>200 mph
