Early in the morning hours of Saturday, July 18, 2020 a line of storms moved across east-central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin producing a number of brief tornadoes. While a line of storms moving through overnight is a common occurrence across the Northland during the middle of summer, these storms were in an environment favoring the development of brief tornadoes due to the low level wind profile. These tornadoes can spin up extremely quickly and are much more difficult to anticipate on radar compared to traditional supercell tornadoes. While the tornadoes that occurred were all short in path length and brief in nature, they produced significant wind damage over a very localized area. At this time there are at least two tornadoes that have been confirmed, but there may have been two additional tornadoes that are still being investigated. The National Weather Services thanks storm spotters and our partners at the county and tribal level, especially those who work in 911 Dispatch and Emergency Management for their assistance in sharing reports and helping us make accurate assessments of the damage. All information below is preliminary in nature. (For information about tornadoes that occured in central Minnesota and parts of west-central Wisconsin, please consult our neighboring office in the Twin Cities/Chanhassen, MN.) .TORNADO #1 - Maple/Blueberry, Wisconsin... Rating: EF-1 Estimated peak wind: 100 mph Path length /Statute/: 0.4 miles Path width /Maximum/: 50 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start date: Jul/18/2020 Start time: 1:48 AM CDT Start location: 2 N Blueberry / Douglas / WI Start Lat/Lon: 46.6036 / -91.6702 End date: Jul/18/2020 End time: 1:50 AM CDT End location: 2 N Blueberry / Douglas / WI End_lat/lon: 46.6062 / 91.6623 .OVERVIEW... Another brief tornado occurred near the community of Sanborn (within the township of White River) near the intersection of County Road E and Petrin Rd/Highway 112. Damage was localized to just a few properties and included a major loss of roof panels of a garage and total collapse of a metal outbuilding. Additional imagery may result in longer path length, but overall this tornado was extremely short in duration and path length, with a rotation signature appearing on radar for just one scan (scanning the low level environment every 3 minutes) and was not preceded by a Tornado Warning. This appears to be the last/final tornado from this line of storms. .Tornado #2 - Sanborn, Wisconsin (Town of White River)... Rating: EF-1 Estimated peak wind: 110 mph Path length /Statute/: 0.6 miles Path width /Maximum/: 50 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start date: Jul/18/2020 Start time: 2:51 AM CDT Start location: 1 NNW Sanborn / Ashland / WI Start Lat/Lon: 46.4429 / -90.9128 End date: Jul/18/2020 End time: 2:53 AM CDT End location: 1 N Sanborn / Ashland / WI End_lat/lon: 46.4499 / -90.9054 EF Scale: The Enhanced Fujita Scale Classifies Tornadoes into the following categories.
