EF0 - 6 EF1 - 9 EF2 - 4 Wind - 2 Total Tornadoes - 19 The National Weather Service Offices in Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, and Tallahassee have identified 26 tornado occurrences with the April 12th tornado outbreak. The number of tornadoes associated with this event is the 5th highest total for a single event since 1950. Please view our web pages or Public Information Statements for specific tornado information. EF0 - 8 EF1 - 13 EF2 - 5 Total - 26 .OVERVIEW... An upper-level low over the southwest United States evolved into a negatively-tilted shortwave trough as it moved over the southeastern United States. A warm front steadily moved northward during the morning and afternoon hours on Sunday, April 12. This allowed an unstable air mass to move northward and overspread much of the region. At the same time, very strong wind shear moved in as the upper trough neared. An initial wave of severe storms affected areas near and north of Interstate 20, involving tornadoes, damaging straight-line winds, and some hail. Through the evening, a second wave of thunderstorms affected the remaining areas of Central Alabama with tornadoes and damaging straight-line winds. Flooding also resulted from training rainfall near and north of Interstate 20. Some roads became impassible or were washed out. This weather event was large in scope and produced severe weather from Oklahoma and Texas, through the southeastern United States, then up the east coast to New York. The tornadoes below are listed in chronological order for Central Alabama. Following the tornadoes are areas of straight line wind damage. .TORNADO #1 Ethelsville Tornado (Pickens County) Rating: EF-0 Estimated Peak Wind: 75 mph Path Length /statute/: 1.51 miles Path Width /maximum/: 200 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 04/12/2020 Start Time: 4:01 pm CDT Start Location: 3 SSE Ethelsville Start Lat/Lon: 33.3697/-88.1937 End Date: 04/12/2020 End Time: 4:03 pm CDT End Location: 3 E Pine Grove End Lat/Lon: 33.3820/-88.1722 Survey Summary: Northwestern Pickens County was affected by a tornado.
