...NWS DAMAGE SURVEY FOR 04/12-13/2020 TORNADO EVENT...

.UPDATE #12...This update adjusts/extends the end point to the
Murray County tornado.

Information for the tornadoes on April 12 and 13, 2020 are
included below, sorted chronologically. Please check the latest 
statement for updates.

Storm Summary: This tornado originated just north of Summerville 
in Chattooga county where several trees were snapped or uprooted 
around the Hair Lake Road/Mahan Road intersection. The tornado 
traveled northeast, continuing to snap or uproot small to medium-
sized trees. A 10K pound camper was overturned by the tornado
near Orchard Hill Road otherwise structural damage was mainly 
confined to shingles and/or siding being pulled off homes. As the
tornado continued to travel toward the town of Pennville over
some remote terrain, it appeared to briefly intensify over Back 
Penn Road, just west of Hwy 27. A trailer was destroyed and one 
corner of a barn’s exterior wall was heavily damaged. Multiple 
trees around this property were uprooted as well. The damage at 
this point was consistent with an EF- 1 (90-95 MPH winds). Mainly
pockets of tree damage and minor structural (roof) damage was
then seen as the tornado moved just east of Trion, beginning to 
encounter Taylor Ridge and the Walker county line.

The tornado crossed the Chattooga/Walker county line nearly 
paralleling Halls Valley Road. Trees were down on either side of 
the road as the tornado appeared to turn more north, possibly 
being affected by the higher terrain/ridge to the east. More 
significant tree damage was seen along Ramey Road just before Hwy
151. Evidence of numerous large trees snapped along with more 
intense structural damage along 151 just east of Halls Valleys 
Road suggested the tornado intensified to EF-1 quickly. It was 
also at this time that a small Tornado Debris Signature (TDS) was
seen from KHTX (Hytop AL) radar. About 1/4 mile up the hill from 
151 and Halls Valley Road, a 2-story home was hit hard. The
entire second story and roof were removed with heavy damage to 
the exterior walls. A jeep was also tossed more than 150 yards 
from its original location. An additional home had a good portion
of its roof torn off on one side while the floor above the garage
collapsed on the other side. Windows and doors were blown out and
numerous large pines were snapped about halfway down. It was in 
this area between the Hwy 151 and Halls Valley Road intersection 
and Beard Drive, the tornado was at its strongest (EF-2) with max
winds between 120-125 MPH. The tornado then crossed Hwy
151 around Mildred’s Way with more snapped/uprooted trees, then
appeared to quickly weaken as it rode the west-side of Taylor’s
Ridge. Tree damage dropped off and ended near Smith Gap Road with
no other damage seen beyond this point.

Storm Summary: This tornado touched down in west-central Murray
county (GA) along Mitchell Bridge Road, just northwest of the Indian
Trace Golf Course, where several smaller trees were snapped in this
location. Additional damage was seen along a path that crossed Twin
Lakes Road and Hwy 286 where a few trees were snapped or uprooted and
minor roof/siding damage occurred at several homes. The tornado
appeared to briefly strengthen around Ellis Circle where there was more
notable exterior damage to homes along with a higher number of trees
seen uprooted. As the tornado crossed Fullers Chapel Road,
noticeable strengthening occurred. Aerial drone footage indicated a
wide swath of large trees cut down just before Norton Bridge Road.
Then, at least 8 double-wide manufactured homes were completely
destroyed along Deer Park Drive, with several others sustaining some
type of damage. It was here the tornado quickly jumped to EF-2
intensity with max winds around 125 MPH.   Continuing north-
northeast, similar significant damage was seen along Ridgeview Lane
and Fieldview Court, where additional (mainly doublewide)
manufactured homes were destroyed. Also, a recently built cell tower
was left crumpled by the intense winds. At this point, the tornado
reached its peak intensity with max winds around 135 MPH (high-end
EF2). The tornado maintained its EF-2 intensity as it crossed over
Zion Church Hill Road, just before Hwy 225. As the strong tornado
crossed 225, a small single-family home was heavily damaged with
just a couple of interior walls left standing. Along Jim Petty Road,
there were 4 large chicken houses - one was completely destroyed
with heavy damage to 2 of the other 3. Debris was thrown several
hundred yards away. Estimated winds continued in the 110-120 MPH
range in this area. Heading north along Jim Petty Road near Hawkins
Road, the damage appeared to lessen quickly with just a few trees
down and minor structural (roof) damage to a shed. Some additional
damage, mainly trees being snapped or uprooted was seen along Halls
Chapel Road, just before Temple Grove road. The tornado is believed
to have lifted just beyond this point, along Sumac Ridge.

Storm Summary: This tornado originated in Dekalb County, AL, in 
the forecast area of NWS Huntsville where EF-1 damage occurred. 
The tornado crossed the Alabama/Georgia border at EF-1 strength 
downing numerous trees along Michaels Road/Brown Gap Cemetery
road before destroying the pillars in front of a house and 
causing additional damage to the roof. The tornado then continued 
northeast crossing Back Valley Road downing several trees on the 
Trenton Golf Club property. Along US Highway 11, additional trees 
were downed damaging houses before the tornado moved into the city
of Trenton. In Trenton, notable damage occurred along Glenview 
Drive where an RV was overturned and destroyed. Additional tree 
damage was seen along Canyon Park Drive before the tornado lifted.
In all, around 100 homes were damaged with a few destroyed from 
trees falling in them. For more information on the tornado when it

Survey Summary:

**This portion was written by NWS Peachtree City (GA)**

The weak tornado (initially) was embedded within very strong 
thunderstorm winds (QLCS) that was tracking quickly east-
northeast. Ground surveys and radar data suggest it touched down 
on the south side of Fort Oglethorpe, near the Chickamauga 
Battlefield Visitor Center, snapping several trees near the 
intersection of Post Road and Lafayette Road. The tornado 
strengthened quickly as it approached the industrial area of town,
along Battlefield Parkway (Hwy 2) with several businesses 
sustaining structural damage, including a metal building structure
(MBS) along Howard Drive completely losing an exterior (side) 
wall and part of its roof. It was in this area that a weather 
station at the Ft. Oglethorpe Public Works Department measured an 
unconfirmed wind gust of 106 MPH (EF- 1 winds). The tornado then 
skipped to the northeast, snapping or uprooting small areas of 
trees with a few homes sustaining mainly roof/siding damage, from 
Park Forrest Drive to several side streets off of Hwy 146 (Cloud 
Springs Road), to Carrol and Karen Drive. The tornado crossed I-75
along Scruggs Road, then crossed the Tennessee/Georgia state-line
somewhere between Scruggs Road and GA- Hwy 41 (Ringgold Rd in 
Tennessee).

As the tornado crossed the state line, it quickly moved across
the Harris Hills area where some trees were uprooted. It then 
continued towards East Brainerd Road and Stratman Circle where an 
auto parts store was completely leveled and nearby structures had 
significant roof damage done. The tornado then struck the end of a
large shopping building where a restaurant was located. The 
restaurant facade was destroyed and the roof was peeled back. This
is where the tornado picked up strength and was near its peak 
intensity. It continued northeast into the Drake Forest 
neighborhood where extensive structure, roof, and tree damage was 
noted. There were likely pockets of EF-3 damage here, as well. The
tornado damage path really widened as it moved northeast into the
Holly Hills neighborhood. This was likely the widest part of the 
tornado. Nearly as far as you could see to the southeast, tree 
trunks were snapped and significant home damage was noted. Some 
areas were blocked by tree debris and fallen power poles as well 
as large clean up machinery which limited easy access to some 
areas. Additional damage was found in Ooltewah near the Summit 
Softball Complex and particularly the significant roof damage to 
several units/buildings of the Integra Hills Preserve Apartments. 
The tornado weakened as it crossed South Lee Highway and 
eventually dissipated in southwestern Bradley County.

Survey Summary: Another EF0 tornado began near Maple Rd in
Lindale from the same storm that spawned the tornado in southwest
Floyd County. The tornado traveled north-northeast approximately 
3 miles resulting in spotty areas of tree damage and closing some
roads and causing power outages. At the 3100 block of Rockmart
Rd, approximately a dozen small trees were snapped on the west 
side of the road. The tornado finally dissipated near the Callier 
Springs Golf Course. No structures were affected.

Survey Summary: An EF1 tornado touched down in Bartow County to 
the southwest of Cartersville along West Ave (route 113) where a 
fence was blown down and roofing material was peeled at a small 
business. The tornado continued NE along West Ave with sporadic 
damage to trees before entering the SW side of Cartersville 
downing trees on Cedar Ln. A very large oak tree was downed along
Herring and Fite St onto a home killing a 34 year old male whom 
was asleep in the bedroom that was hit by that large tree. The 
tornado continued NE downing trees along Bartow st and West 
Cherokee Ave in addition to other areas across downtown 
Cartersville. The tornado continued NE through down with mostly 
EF0 type tree damage. The tornado crossed I-75 and GA 294/20 spur
downing a few trees and onto Dean Road downing a few trees with 
mostly EF-0 type tree damage. The tornado intensified as it 
crossed Highway 20 east of I75. Numerous trees were downed near 
the end of Black Rd Northeast with some minor roof damage to a 
home. Bells Ferry Road also had numerous large trees snapped and 
downed across it. The tornado reached maximum intensity in this 
area. The storm crossed Stamp Creek Road downing trees and 
powerlines before entering the Pine Log Wildlife Management Area 
downing at least 60-70 more trees according to Wildlife
Management Personnel before lifting. The storm eventually 
regenerated a new tornado in Cherokee County.

Survey Summary: The mesovortex from the quasi-linear convective 
storm that produced the Talbot County tornado intensified as it 
moved into Upson County. A tornado developed just outside of of 
the southern city limits of Thomaston near Gordon School Rd east 
of Old Talbotton Rd, increasing in intensity as it traveled 
northeast. The tornado narrowly missed the densely populated 
Lincoln Park area but did hit Southern Crescent Technical College
and Raintree Golf and Country Club on US19 with winds of 70 to
85 mph. The tornado intensified further after it passed Triune
Mill Rd, where homes and cars were damaged from falling trees, on
a path parallel to and just south of Yatesville Highway. As it 
reached Trice Cemetery Rd, the tornado broadened to over 2/3rds
of mile in diameter. An unoccupied mobile home rotated 90 degrees
and rolled on its side. As the tornado moved into Trinity road it
reached maximum intensity where a single story home had most of 
its roof blown off and every tree (mostly Loblolly Pine) within a 
1/8 mile radius was snapped. It was at this point that the KFFC 
WSR-88D radar (about 30 nm NNW of this location) detected a 
rotational velocity of 90kts and tornado debris was detected at an
altitude of 25,000 ft. The tornado slowly began to weaken as it 
traveled through northeast Upson county and into far southern 
Lamar County crossing US341 before finally lifting near Community 
House Rd just east of Leverette Rd.

In total, 159 structures were affected, 38 homes had minor 
damage, 20 with major damage and 7 were destroyed.

Storm Summary: A weak EF0 tornado briefly touched down in South 
Western Fulton County at around 2:36 AM along Welcome All Ter SW.
A few trees were uprooted or snapped behind some homes along that
street. The tornado continued northeast downing small limbs and 
lofting debris. NWS Radar detected lofted debris at about 1000 
feet as the tornado crossed Delano Road. Ground evidence
suggested that this was mostly small limbs and leaves as there 
wasn't widespread damage on the ground but more sporadic large 
limbs and an occasional tree down. The storm continued Northeast 
crossing North Commerce drive were several trees were snapped or 
uprooted in between 2 large warehouses. No other damage was noted 
in the area. A debris signature continued to be present on radar. 
The storm crossed Interstate 285 and then Washington Rd where a 
large tree was downed causing minor damage to a house. Several 
trees were snapped behind a home along Janice Drive and along 
Karen Road before lifting. 

.Monroe County Tornado...

Storm Summary: This tornado is a regeneration from the same storm
which caused the Upson County EF3 tornado to the southwest. This 
tornado first touched down along Potts Cemetery Road downing a
few trees continuing NE crossing HW 41 and Ingram Rd snapping and
uprooting a few trees. This portion of the track was rated EF0. 
The tornado wound up quickly NE of Hwy 41 into an EF3 as it 
approached Goodwyne/Collier Rd. A large 100'x150' metal building 
and small home were completely destroyed. The metal frame and 
3'x3'x3' concrete footers for the building were all pulled from 
the ground with the building and twisted amongst the wreckage 
leaving holes in the ground around the concrete slab. Several cars
were flipped and thrown including a jeep which was thrown onto 
the small home which sat next to the metal building. The homeowner
was inside his home in the bathroom sheltering and survived under
the a large pile of debris from both the house and building. 
Rescue operations took 45 minutes to get to the homeowner under 
the debris. A small plane was destroyed, a mid size tractor was 
flipped over and a boat was thrown from the tornado at this 
location. High end EF1/EF2 Tree damage occurred in the area to the
surrounding and to the NE of the building. As the Tornado 
continued NE along Collier Rd, numerous trees were snapped and 
uprooted including a large tree onto a home near Collier and Smith
Rd. The tornado crossed Interstate 75 near mile marker 188 
throwing numerous trees onto the highway shutting it down for a 
period of time until they were cleared. By this point, the tornado
intensity decreased to EF0/EF1 and continued NE crossing English 
Rd downing trees and eventually Hwy 42 before weakening. NWS Radar
imagery suggests debris was lofted to as high as 19kft from this 
particular tornado.

Summary: This tornado touched down in extreme northeast Hall 
County at around 250 AM EDT, but quickly crossed into Habersham 
County along Herring Mill Rd. The tornado moved east/northeast, 
crossing U.S.23 just west of Alto. The tornado began to move in 
more of an easterly direction as it moved across the south side
of the city of Baldwin, taking it into Banks County at around 256
AM near the intersection of Park Ave and Old Orchard Rd. The 
tornado continued east from Baldwin, although damage indicators 
became more sporadic as it passed through a remote portion of the 
Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest . The tornado briefly crossed
over the southeast corner of Habersham County at around 259 AM 
before moving into Stephens County, apparently dissipating in the 
Old Cannon Rd/E Red Root Rd area. Damage along the entire path was
largely limited to snapped and uprooted trees, although one 
mobile home received minor to moderate roof damage on Hamby 
Mountain Park Dr in Baldwin (Banks County).

Storm Summary: A tornado briefly touched down in Macon as a line 
of strong storms moved through the city. The storm first touched 
down on Edgewater Drive causing a tree to fall onto a house. The 
storm crossed I475 and ripping shingles and roofing material off 
of 2 hotels next to the interstate as well as blowing a fence 
down. The storm crossed Zebulon Rd where the front door and 
windows of a Walgreens Store were completely blown in and a large
hole was blown through the roof. Most of the interior shelving
and ceiling was blown over and downed with significant damage 
occurring to the store. A Walmart adjacent to the Walgreens had 
its sunroofs blown out with minor roof damage elsewhere. Numerous 
trees were uprooted in and around the Walmart Parking lot. Further
up Zebulon, a gas station canopy sustained damage as much of the 
metal sheeting was peeled and thrown. Significant shingle damage 
occurred to a small professional building next to the gas station.
A large tree was downed onto Zebulon Rd next to the Chick-Fil-a. 
The storm continued NE it hit the subdivision along Huddersfield 
Rd and Wakefield Way hard with numerous large trees downed 
including several onto homes causing major damage to the homes. 
The tornado began to weaken as it continued NE crossing Forsyth Rd
with branches and limbs down. The tornado ended near Wesleyan Dr 
and Tharpe Dr with a few trees downed.

Storm Summary: A high end EF1 tornado touched down along Shady 
Dale Rd in Putnam County knocking down a few trees. The tornado 
continued NE through the Oconee National Forest downing trees and
crossing Godfrey Rd where numerous trees were snapped or
uprooted. Most of the damage to this point was rated EF0 to low 
end EF1. As the tornado moved NE crossing Reids Rd it intensified 
to maximum intensity snapping hundreds of trees 10 feet off the 
ground as it crossed the road. The storm continued NE crossing Hwy
129 snapping and uprooting trees. 3 homes located along the hwy 
sustained minor roof damage from the storm. The storm crossed 
Bethel Church Rd snapping trees and across Lower Harmony Road 
where the top of a silo was torn off in addition to roofing 
material from a nearby barn. The storm eventually crossed Denham 
road knocking over a few trees before lifting as it approached a 
neighborhood along Hunters Chase Ct.

Storm Summary: The same storm which generated a tornado in Putnam
County regenerated a new EF1 tornado once it crossed into Greene 
County at Lake Oconee. The tornado first touched down along 
Reynolds Parkway within the Creek Club Reynolds Plantation 
subdivision snapping an uprooting a few trees. As the tornado 
continued NE through the subdivision it intensified to maximum 
intensity near the golf course at Rose Creek and Cottage Lane. 
Several well built homes sustained minor roof damage from wind or
debris. Hundreds of trees were snapped or uprooted in the area 
between Sandy Ford and Rose Creek. The tornado reached the point 
at the end of Rose Creek where several homes had trees fall on 
them caused more significant damage. A portion of dock at a home 
on Rose Creek was lifted out of the water and thrown onto the 
shore and numerous boathouses sustained major damage. The storm 
crossed a portion of Lake Oconee and emerged into another 
subdivision along Cherokee Drive, Cloudland Ct. and Eagle Bluff 
Drive where numerous trees were snapped and uprooted. Several 
homes sustained damage from trees here as well. The storm crossed
Bouldercrest Way and Sun Valley Ct, across another portion of
Lake Oconee and up Club Drive snapping and uprooting trees. The 
tornado weakened a bit as it moved up Armour Rd with EF0 type tree
damage and crossed Fleur de Lac Lane where a pocket of EF1 tree 
damage was observed and a home was severely damaged from a falling
tree. The storm continued to weaken as it moved NE and dissipated
as it crossed Veaszy and White Plains Rd where a tree was knocked
over. In total, an estimated 35 to 40 homes were impacted by 
trees from this tornado.

Storm Summary: This tornado was part of a dual circulation 
separated by only 5 miles. This was the southern most of those 
circulations and produced EF1 damage almost exclusively with
winds of 90 mph. This produced mainly tree damage in the form of 
uprooted softwoods and hardwoods.

circulation separated by only 5 miles. Although it was a very

Storm Summary: This tornado began along News Bridge Road 
destroying a building before moving over more rural sections and 
snapping hundreds of trees consisting of both softwoods and 
hardwoods. The tornado was remarkably consistent in its track, 
producing EF1 damage between 95 and 100 mph nearly the entire 
path. Dozens of homes were damaged with a few destroyed from
trees falling on them. The tornado near HJ lane pick up two 
vehicles including a truck and displaced them 100 yards. Shortly 
before the tornado lifted, it crossed into Jefferson county where 
additional tree damage occurred.
