A strong cold front crossed the region during the evening hours on Saturday, January 11, 2020. A line of severe thunderstorms developed ahead of this front and produced widespread straight line wind damage across the region. A brief area of rotation formed within this squall line over eastern Claiborne County. This brief circulation spawned a weak EF-0 tornado that made a brief and intermittent damage path through the north sides of New Tazewell and Tazewell. .Tazewell, TN Tornado... Rating: EF-0 Estimated Peak Wind: 65 mph Path Length /statute/: 3.3 miles Path Width /maximum/: 30 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 01/11/2020 Start Time: 05:55 PM EST Start Location: 0.3 Miles NW New Tazewell / Claiborne County / TN Start Lat/Lon: 36.4452 / -83.6048 End Date: 01/11/2020 End Time: 05:58 PM EST End Location: 1.7 Miles NNE Tazewell / Claiborne County / TN End Lat/Lon: 36.4775 / -83.5638 Survey Summary: The tornado initially touched down on Pine Avenue to the NW of New Tazewell blowing off half of the roof of a barn and uprooting or snapping several trees. The tornado then produced sub-severe damage until it uprooted a large pine tree onto a house on Cherokee Circle and damaged roof shingles and shutters of a house on Linden Street. The house on Linden Street had a quarter of the roof shingles peeled off on the southeast corner along with two window shutters blown off on the same side. Sub- severe damage then continued along the path until Murphy Mill Road where soffits were damaged on the front porch of a house and multiple trees were uprooted or snapped in different directions on the properties across the street.
