The National Weather Service in Blacksburg VA has confirmed a tornado in Yadkin County North Carolina on May 24 2017. A NWS Damage Assessment Team has concluded that a tornado impacted portions of Yadkin County North Carolina southeast of Yadkinville during the afternoon of May 24, 2017. Here are the specifics: A tornado with a continuous path crossed out of Davie County, NC into Yadkin County, NC around 417 PM EDT on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 just southwest of Baity Road. One injury was experienced by an individual on Baity Road when a tree limb was blown into a mobile home that was occupied at the time. The tornado continued to move northeast at around 40 mph for the next 4.1 miles, lifting and dissipating just northeast of Watkins Road. Approximately 45 homes and other buildings were at least partially damaged along the tornadic path. The tornado reached peak intensity and produced EF2 level damage, associated with winds of approximately 125 mph, as it moved over Courtney-Huntsville Road - causing extensive damage to the local elementary school gymnasium. The supercell thunderstorm which produced this tornado continued northeast as far as Patrick Country, VA. Another NWS damage assessment team is moving south from Patrick County, VA toward Yadkin County, NC to determine if additional tornadic damage was produced from this storm. If additional tornadic damage is determined northeast of Yadkin County, NC, an additional Public Information Statement will be released later today highlighting this information. EF1...wind speeds 86 to 110 mph. EF2...wind speeds 111 to 135 mph. EF3...wind speeds 136 to 165 mph. EF4...wind speeds 166 to 200 mph. EF5...wind speeds greater than 200 mph.
