...Near Record Hail Stone Measured from June 14th Event...

An NWS survey team and the MS State Climatologist measured a giant
hail stone from June 14th 2023. This stone was preserved by the
individual who captured it and was officially measured on Friday
June 16th.

Stone specifics:

Max diameter: 4.88 inches (4 7/8 inches)
Event Date: 6/14/2023
Event Time: 1258-102pm

Additional information: The stone was the largest in the yard and
captured fairly quickly, photoed and then placed in an air-tight 
bag in the freezer for preservation. The event lasted several 
minutes with a scattering of other large hail stones which ranged 
from 1.5 to 3.5 inches. Some damage was noted to vehicles and 
roofs in the area.

Historical information: This stone is the 2nd largest stone in MS
for any month. Record was from April 10, 1962 in Lafayette 
County. This is the largest in the month of June. Previous 
record...3 inches, Alcorn County 6/29/79 and Grenada County 
6/13/70.
