An NWS survey team and the MS State Climatologist measured a giant hail stone from June 14th 2023. This stone was preserved by the individual who captured it and was officially measured on Friday June 16th. Stone specifics: Max diameter: 4.88 inches (4 7/8 inches) Event Date: 6/14/2023 Event Time: 1258-102pm Additional information: The stone was the largest in the yard and captured fairly quickly, photoed and then placed in an air-tight bag in the freezer for preservation. The event lasted several minutes with a scattering of other large hail stones which ranged from 1.5 to 3.5 inches. Some damage was noted to vehicles and roofs in the area. Historical information: This stone is the 2nd largest stone in MS for any month. Record was from April 10, 1962 in Lafayette County. This is the largest in the month of June.
