245 NOUS42 KMLB 052040 PNSMLB Public Information Statement National Weather Service Melbourne FL 440 PM EDT Sat Nov 5 2022 ...October 2022 Ended Up Drier and Slightly Cooler than Normal Across East Central Florida... Behind Hurricane Ian’s departure at the end of September, a period of drier and cooler conditions prevailed over the area into early October. A few fronts were able to push southward into the area through mid to late month, with these boundaries typically stalling across central Florida and bringing periods of increased rainfall at times. However, any heavier precipitation totals from slow moving storms or persistent rainbands were very localized, with end of month rainfall totals still ending up below normal across much of east central Florida. A stronger cold front that was able to move completely through the area on the 18th, led to well below normal temperatures across the region for a few days after. This bout of cooler weather and the cooler start to the month, largely led to average temperatures for October that were below normal by 1 to 2 degrees at most primary climate sites. ...Temperatures... Northerly winds into the start of October, behind the passage of Hurricane Ian, were reinforced with a passing cool front on the 4th, to produce overall drier and cooler than normal conditions for the first several days of the month. Highs were still able to reach into the low to mid 80s most days, but overnight lows fell to more comfortable values in the low to mid 60s. In fact, the low temperature at Vero Beach fell below the 60 degree mark early on the 7th, tying their record low of 58 degrees for that day. A couple weak fronts then moved into the area through mid-month, but stalled with temperatures actually increasing to near to above normal values as highs rose to the mid to upper 80s and lows often stayed in the low to mid 70s. A stronger cold front was then able to move southward through central Florida on the 18th, with well below normal temperatures immediately following its passage. All primary climate stations tied or broke their lowest maximum temperature records the next day on the 19th, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s across the region. Lows plummeted into the 50s that night, which were some of the coolest temperatures since April across the region. A very slow rise in temperatures then followed, but overall cooler than normal conditions prevailed for at least a few days following before the month ended on a warm note, with highs back in the 80s and lows generally in the upper 60s to low 70s. The cooler start to the month and the significant drop in temperatures behind the cold frontal passage on the 18th, had the largest influence on average temperatures for October 2022, which were around 1 to 2 degrees below normal at most sites. The exception was at Orlando, which ended up close to normal for the month (0.2 degrees above normal). Otherwise, departures from normal ranged from 1.2 degrees below normal at Leesburg and Fort Pierce, to 2.7 degrees below normal at Melbourne. Still, this wasn’t significantly cool enough for any sites to rank within their top 10 coldest Octobers on record. Daily Record Temperatures for the Month: Daytona Beach: - October 19th: Tied record cool high of 68 degrees last set in 1927. Leesburg: - October 19th: Record cool high of 67 degrees. Previous record was 72 degrees last set in 1996. Sanford: - October 19th: Record cool high of 69 degrees. Previous record was 70 degrees last set in 1955. Orlando: - October 19th: Record cool high of 70 degrees. Previous record was 71 degrees last set in 1955. Melbourne: - October 19th: Record cool high of 70 degrees. Previous record was 73 degrees last set in 1967. Vero Beach: - October 7th: Record low of 58 degrees. Previous record was 60 degrees last set in 1987. - October 19th: Record cool high of 73 degrees. Previous record was 74 degrees last set in 1955. Fort Pierce: - October 19th: Tied record cool high of 73 degrees last set in 1955. Average temperatures for October 2022 at the primary climate sites across east central Florida are as follows (rankings provided if in the top 10): - Daytona Beach had a monthly average temperature of 73.1 degrees Fahrenheit, which was 1.3 degrees below normal. - Leesburg had a monthly average temperature of 74.1 degrees Fahrenheit, which was 1.2 degrees below normal. - Sanford had a monthly average temperature of 74.2 degrees Fahrenheit, which was 1.3 degrees below normal. - Orlando had a monthly average temperature of 75.7 degrees Fahrenheit, which was 0.2 degrees above normal. - Melbourne had a monthly average temperature of 74.8 degrees Fahrenheit, which was 2.7 degrees below normal. - Vero Beach had a monthly average temperature of 75.5 degrees Fahrenheit, which was 1.4 degrees below normal. - Fort Pierce had a monthly average temperature of 75.2 degrees Fahrenheit, which was 1.2 degrees below normal. ...Rainfall... Despite some light rainfall that occurred with a frontal passage on the 4th, and some coastal showers behind this boundary, much drier conditions largely prevailed across the area for this first several days of October. This was a welcome pattern after all the flooding created by Hurricane Ian at the end of September. A weak front moved into central Florida on the 9th and stalled for a couple days, which increased coverage of showers and also led to a few storms, mainly south of Orlando through the 11th. As this front faded, showers and storms increased well ahead of another approaching weak front on the 12th, with locally heavy rainfall of 5 to 7 inches occurring with a persistent storm east of downtown Orlando. As the weak front moved in and also eventually stalled across the area on the 13th, scattered showers and storms were then focused across southern portions of central Florida once again for another couple days following. Higher coverage of showers and storms then moved through the area on the 17th ahead of an approaching stronger cold front. Some strong to isolated severe storms occurred, producing hail and strong to locally damaging wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph. Additionally, one severe storm produced an EF-0 tornado (winds estimated between 75-85 mph) in the Vero Beach area, producing damage in the Midway Estates and Vero Shores communities. Rainfall was mostly less than an inch this day, with some locally higher amounts between 2 to 3 inches across the northern Treasure Coast. Mostly dry conditions then followed for several days, with some limited coastal showers through the 25th. As another weak front moved into the region and stalled on the 27th, showers and storms increased once again. From the evening of the 27th and through the overnight of the 28th, two separate persistent storms developed over to north of downtown Orlando, producing locally heavy rainfall up to 3 to 6 inches in this area. Some additional showers and isolated storms occurred through the end of October, but any precipitation amounts were fairly low. Despite the increase in showers and storms with fronts that moved into or through the region, rainfall for October was below normal for most locations across the area. In fact, for Daytona Beach, Sanford, and Titusville, October 2022 ranked in the top ten driest on record, where rainfall totals for the month were less than an inch. It was the 4th driest October on record at Daytona Beach and Titusville and 5th driest at Sanford, with rainfall amounts around 3 to 4 inches below normal for the month. Elsewhere, rainfall deficits were around 1 to 3 inches below normal for October. Some localized spots of near to above normal rainfall occurred, especially around downtown Orlando, due to the locally heavy rainfall events previously mentioned.
