The National Weather Service has been following up on the storms in south central Minnesota on Tuesday afternoon and evening, June 2. There was definitely some very large hail, and some areas had wind damage from very strong downdrafts. All of the wind damage reports from the areas around New Richland, Waldorf, Hollandale, Myrtle, Albert Lea, Lewisville, and other areas of south central Minnesota were due to strong thunderstorm outflow winds. We also looked into the reports of tornadoes. The storms were highly visible from miles away and dozens of people took pictures and video. So far, we have not seen any photos or videos that indicated there were tornadoes. There were some pictures and videos showing what some refer to as gustnadoes, which are not tornadoes whatsoever, but instead are short-lived relatively weak circulations associated with outflow, such as with a shelf cloud or rear flank downdraft. Unlike tornadoes, they do not have any concentrated circulation at the overhead updraft cloud base, and one usually sees dust eventually spreading out. Many professional and decades-long highly experienced storm chasers were also watching the storms from many different angles, and to our knowledge, they have all said these were not tornadoes. If anyone has video that shows the entire view of the storms, including cloud base, and believes they have video of a tornado, please let us know, as we always want to document these properly.
