...Preliminary Storm Survey results for Walker County damage Jan
3rd...

The National Weather Service office in Birmingham AL conducted a
storm survey today for the Walker County damage. The survey is in
relation to the severe thunderstorms that moved through the area
on January 3rd and 4th.

Damage was found approximately 5.7 miles south southeast of Arley,
along Smith Lake. A few trees were snapped off and a handful were
uprooted near the Lakeshore Cabins and RV. To the northeast,
several more trees sustained varying degrees of damage. A few
homes sustained minor fascia and shingle damage. Several boat
houses also suffered varying degrees of damage. The area that was
impacted was about a half mile long on the southern shore of
Smith Lake. No damage was noted on the northern side of the lake
in Winston County. Maximum wind speeds were estimated up to 80
mph. The damage occurred around 12:38 pm CST.

Additional evaluation is ongoing to determine if the damage was
caused by thunderstorm winds or a tornado. Pictures, videos, the
survey results, and radar imagery will all be looked at again
before a determination is made. If anyone has any additional
damage information, pictures, or videos, please forward them to
us.

The storm survey information will also be available on our
