653 NOUS44 KBMX 072252 PNSBMX ALZ011>015-017>050-081100- Public Information Statement National Weather Service Birmingham AL 452 PM CST Sat Jan 7 2023 ...Preliminary Storm Survey results for Walker County damage Jan 3rd... The National Weather Service office in Birmingham AL conducted a storm survey today for the Walker County damage. The survey is in relation to the severe thunderstorms that moved through the area on January 3rd and 4th. Damage was found approximately 5.7 miles south southeast of Arley, along Smith Lake. A few trees were snapped off and a handful were uprooted near the Lakeshore Cabins and RV. To the northeast, several more trees sustained varying degrees of damage. A few homes sustained minor fascia and shingle damage. Several boat houses also suffered varying degrees of damage. The area that was impacted was about a half mile long on the southern shore of Smith Lake. No damage was noted on the northern side of the lake in Winston County. Maximum wind speeds were estimated up to 80 mph. The damage occurred around 12:38 pm CST. Additional evaluation is ongoing to determine if the damage was caused by thunderstorm winds or a tornado. Pictures, videos, the survey results, and radar imagery will all be looked at again before a determination is made.
