Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Hanford CA
534 PM PDT Sat Nov 5 2022

.UPDATE...Updated Air Quality Issues Section...

&&

.SYNOPSIS...Expect clouds and just some light rain spreading
across the area tonight ahead of a slow moving storm system. This
system will bring Widespread rain and mountain snow Sunday through
Wednesday morning along with increased winds and well below
normal temperatures. There is a slight chance for thunderstorms
Monday and Tuesday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Moisture streaming inland ahead of a developing
Northeast Pacific low pressure system is spreading some clouds
southward into central California today. Meanwhile, temperatures
are generally running a few degrees warmer than this time
yesterday and highs are expected to top out a few degrees below
normal. Winds are also becoming gusty through and below mountain
passes, and a Wind Advisory is in effect for the Mojave slopes in
Kern County through this evening.

The incoming storm system is still projected to bring significant
amounts of precipitation as it tracks slowly south before
swinging inland across Northern/Central California Tuesday into
Wednesday. Blended model guidance predicts generally light
precipitation moving over mainly the northern half of our area
overnight, with more impactful rain and snow developing during the
day Sunday as the system drops south and moisture is pulled into
our area. By Sunday afternoon a Winter Storm Warning will go into
effect in the Sierra zones north of Kings Canyon, as snow
accumulations begin to cause travel impacts. As heavy snow spreads
south in the Sierra,a Winter Storm Warning goes into effect from
Kings Canyon south to Kern County at 10 PM. These warnings
continue through 10 AM Wednesday morning when the precipitation
will taper off behind the passing storm system. The Yosemite
Valley zone has been included in the Winter Storm Warning as
several inches of snow are expected to accumulate there as snow
levels drop Monday.

Total accumulations around 4 feet are possible in the higher
elevations, with as much as 1-2 feet down around 4000 ft as snow
levels lower with the incoming storm system. By later Monday,
significant snow amounts begin to accumulate at the higher
elevations in Kern County, with as much as 7-14 inches on the
highest peaks. As snow levels drop to pass level later Tuesday
into early Wednesday morning, we could see snow impacting travel
over the passes of Kern County. Currently there is a 25 percent
probability for at least 0.01 inch of snow at Fort Tejon overnight
Tuesday night, and a 40 percent probability at Tehachapi. A Winter
Storm Watch has been issued for the Kern County mountain zones
Monday evening through Wednesday morning.

With as much as 1-2 inches of rain expected toward the est side of
the San Joaquin Valley and 2-4 inches in the Sierra foothills, we
will have to consider the possibility of localized flooding in
these areas.

As the storm system moves away, we will see ridging overhead for
mid to late week next week. Temperatures will remain well below
normal with frost likely in the Valley in the early morning hours,
and possible fog concerns.

&&

.AVIATION...Clouds and light showers will spread southward across

areas of MVFR conditions.
