AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
306 PM PDT Fri Oct 7 2022

.SYNOPSIS...Dry weather with above normal interior temperatures are
forecast through next week. Coastal areas will continue to have low
clouds and fog this weekend, with some clearing each afternoon.

&&

.DISCUSSION...A strong ridge aloft will keep Northwest California in
a dry weather pattern through next week. A warm and dry airmass will
continue to result in above normal high temperatures in the interior,
generally 80's to lower 90's. Overnight low temperatures have
varied widely but were generally above normal too. Low temperatures
for many upper elevations sites have been in the 60's to lower 70's
while many valleys have been dipping down into the mid 40's to
lower 50's under clear skies and low dew-points. The exception has
been a few of the colder valleys in Trinity county such has Hayfork
which has been near normal.

A strong and low marine inversion with light onshore flow will
keep coastal areas under a blanket of low clouds and fog through
the weekend. The fog and low clouds will extend into the coastal
river valleys each night, but should erode back toward the coastline
or beaches each afternoon. Under a shallow moist marine air mass,
temperatures probably will not warm up much.

Temperatures will probably fall slightly (but still above normal)
on Tuesday after the passages of a dry cold front. Moisture looks
quite shallow, so some light precip or drizzle is not completely
impossible. Northerlies will begin to ramp up Monday over coastal
areas and coastal mountains, followed by gusty ridge level
northeasterlies and easterlies on Tuesday. The cold front should
wipe out the stubborn marine layer and bring more sustained
sunshine to the coast with perhaps warmer daytime temperatures.
Strong warming aloft and above normal high temperatures will
return Wed and ramp up toward the end of next week. 850mb
temperature anomalies increase to 10F or more. This will increase
the potential for max temperatures in the upper 90's to around
100F for the hottest interior valleys late in the week if offshore
flow persists. New record highs may be set for places like Ukiah.
Coastal areas could warm up as well, but southerlies may bring
stratus and fog back the coast by Friday.

&&

.AVIATION...Light onshore winds alongside a strong coastal inversion
has kept IFR along the coast most of the day. Satellite shows
stratus and fog pulling back near to coast, possibly bringing a
short period of scattered skies late this afternoon. HREF shows LIFR
ceilings quickly reforming by sunset. With an increasingly shallow
mariner inversion, tonight will likely bring even more consistent
fog with quarter mile fog likely much of the early morning hours.
Otherwise, VFR conditions are expected in the interior. /JHW

&&

.MARINE...Northerlies are gradually increasing in the outer waters
with fresh breezes expected later this evening. Short period seas
are expected to increase with square seas around 7 feet. Conditions
will remain much calmer near shore. Wind and seas are expected to
slightly calm this weekend with short period seas dropping below
advisory criteria late Saturday evening. Gentle winds with short
period seas up to 4 feet are then expected with another round of
stronger northerlies possible behind a weak frontal passage late
Monday. Otherwise, a number of minor mid period swells continue to
train across the area form the northwest and southwest. /JHW
