Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pendleton OR
816 AM PDT Fri Oct 7 2022

.MORNING UPDATE...Not much to discuss once again, as weather
remains quiet in light of prolonged ridging over the region. Some
high clouds can be seen on satellite imagery this morning in light
of a weak wave riding over the top of the ridge axis, but
otherwise largely expecting a persistence forecast for today. Did
expand some haze coverage in the weather grids, as continued
subsidence over the area will allow elevated smoke to remain
settled overhead, primarily across the Basin, eastern mountains,
and foothills of the WA Cascades. This addition of haze was the
only real noteworthy change to this morning's forecast package.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 300 AM PDT Fri Oct 7 2022/

SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday...Benign conditions across the
region tonight as the region remains sat underneath an upper level
ridge of high pressure. Nighttime satellite imagery does show high
decks of cirrus streaming east across WA then south into northeast
OR, but that is about it.

Through Sunday, the PacNW will continue to be under the influence
of an upper level ridge of high pressure. An upper level shortwave
impulse is progged to ridge over-top the ridge later this
afternoon, which will retrograde the ridge axis into the eastern
Pacific, where it will stay through Sunday. Heights will fall
slightly in response to the upper ridge shift, resulting in
cooler afternoon temperatures by about 1 to 2 degrees as compared
to yesterday. At the surface, smoke from regional fires will have
difficulty dispersing as subsidence aloft keeps it near the
surface. As a result, smoke and haze concentrations will increase
and continue to spread into the lower elevations through this
weekend. After today's cirrus decks diminish, expect clear skies
to persist through this weekend. Winds will continue to be light
and diurnally driven, while temperatures will remain 10 to 15
degrees above normal. Lawhorn/82

LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday. A ridge of high pressure will
influence the regions weather dry conditions and above normal
temperatures Monday. Afternoon high temps are forecast to climb
into the upper 70s and low 80s. Meanwhile a quick moving weather
system is forecast to track across the two state area Monday night
and early Tuesday. Pressure gradients may tighten and breezy
winds are possible. Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to be
several degrees cooler but remain above normal. The EOF variance
was showing a lower confidence with the strength of this system.
However the models were in good agreement and will trend toward a
dry weather system that is expected to produce mid and high level
clouds. As the system tracks to the south and east on Tuesday a
ridge of high pressure returns to the area for the remainder of
the week. With the ridge nearly centered over the pacnw adjusted
max temps slightly higher.

AVIATION...12Z TAFs...vfr conditions are expected across all taf
sites for the next 24 hours. Winds are expected to remain light.
