AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
307 PM PST Mon Nov 30 2020

.SYNOPSIS...A weak front moved throught the region today bringing
clouds and some light rain to the coastal areas of Del Norte and
Humboldt counties. Another frosty morning is expected for some
areas tomorrow as skies clear out with light winds. Persistent
high pressure will result in an extended period of dry and mild
weather starting on Tuesday and lasting into the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...The tail-end of a cold front clipped the northern
portions of our forecast area this morning with some light rain
and areas of drizzle. As today's shortwave trough axis passes
quickly east of our area, with rising heights, subsidence and
drier air filtering in this evening. Most guidance keeps the
coast fairly cloudy through sunset, but would not rule out some
partial clearing late, especially along the Del Norte coast.
Heading into tonight, another Frost Advisory is in effect for the
coastal areas of Humboldt County, but feel the Mendocino coast
will not see enough coverage to warrant another advisory.
Lingering moisture and some valley fog development may limit
radiational cooling and frost formation, with less than high
confidence in the forecast low temperatures.

Otherwise, the rest of the week and even into next weekend looks
extremely quiet, with likely an extended stretch of dry weather
for northwest California. A building upper level ridge over
California and the Pacific Northwest will take on a Rex Block
configuration, which will keep any northern Pacific storm systems
from reaching us. One system attempting to run into the ridge may
'split' enough moisture toward northern California for some
increased clouds on Thursday. A similar scenario is possible
again later in the weekend, but otherwise prospects for rain
aren't looking good until the ridge breaks down, perhaps as we
head into mid December. High temperatures look unseasonably mild
with light winds forecast through the weekend. /AAD/JT

.AVIATION...As fronts pass through, bringing light rain to the
coastal terminals, IFR and MVFR conditions toggle and vary flight
conditions as well as visibility. Lowered ceilings around 1500 feet
and overcast skies are lingering as convective profiles are
diminishing. Mist may linger for a period before the high pressure
regime continues as before with dry weather. North winds will pick
up late tomorrow morning for KCEC. Light North winds for KACV
tomorrow afternoon with skies clearing out. Meanwhile, VFR and
mostly clear skies are expected to prevail at KUKI for the TAF
period. /EYS

.MARINE...As a long period swell passes through the waters, around
10 feet at 17 seconds, small craft advisories are in effect for all
waters in the CWA. A series of fronts are making their way over the
area bringing light rain. Gusts around 24 knots and strong breezes
around 20 knots will fill in behind the fronts, further agitating
the already hazardous sea state. A short window of reprieve Tuesday
night will be followed by a much expected long period swell
Wednesday morning, 6 to 10 feet at 21 seconds. This wave group will
raise a sneaker wave threat, which has prompted a Beach Hazard
Statement to be issued from Wednesday morning through Wednesday late
evening. This also raises concern for shoaling in shallower coastal
waters which is a hazard for unsuspecting mariners. Avoid shallow
waters when long period waves are present and do not rely on visual
verification of breaking waves to identify shoals. /EYS

&&

.BEACH HAZARDS...A long period west-northwest swell is on
track to arrive Wednesday. Little has changed with respect to the
high risk of sneaker waves, with light winds Wednesday morning and
little to interfere with the set behavior. Additionally, sunny skies
and mild temperatures will tend to lure folks to the beaches, thus
have issued a Beach Hazards Statement to highlight the threat. If
anything, the projected timing has sped up a bit, so the risk will
begin in the morning and continue into Wednesday night. On Thursday
the waves build high enough to keep them from being as 'sneaky', but
there still may be some in-frequent large waves. /AAD /EYS
