Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pendleton OR
248 AM PST Wed Dec 11 2019

.SHORT TERM...Today through Friday. Short wave will be exiting the
region this morning. Rain and snow will be tapering off. Inversion
and light winds remain over the Columbia basin and valleys with
fog continuing through the morning. Satellite indicating a short
break before the next system moves into the Pacific northwest by
afternoon. This system is a large upper low with a strong westerly
jet which will impact the region through Friday. The initial
front will move through later this afternoon and evening with a
period of rain and higher elevation snow. For tonight through
Friday a strong mid level westerly flow will bring heavy
precipitation to the Cascades. Models indicate several short waves
in the flow moving across the region over the next few days. This
will result in periods of rain and mountain snow for the
remainder of the forecast area as well. The northeast Oregon
mountains will have a fairly good upslope component and will also
receive a decent amount of precipitation. Snow levels will be
around 4-5000 feet today and Thursday lowering to 3-4000 feet by
Friday. Surface winds will be increasing from the southwest Thu
into Fri. This will help mix out the fog in the lower elevations.

.LONG TERM...Friday night through Wednesday...A shortwave trough
is forecast to move across the area Friday night and Saturday with a
chance for mainly mountain snow showers. Snow levels will be 2-3
thousand feet. There will be a lingering slight chance for mountain
snow showers on Sunday. Otherwise A ridge of high pressure will
build over the region for Monday and Tuesday for mostly dry
conditions. Temperatures will be close to normal for this time of
year. On Wednesday an upper level low will undercut the ridge and
turn the upper flow southerly. This will increase moisture and
result in a chance of showers and mountain snow showers with snow
levels 1500-3000 feet. As of now the models are not depicting any
major storms during this forecast period. 78
