Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Southwestern California
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
919 AM PDT Tue Aug 6 2019

...ELEVATED TO BRIEF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS TODAY OVER INTERIOR MOUNTAINS, DESERTS,
AND VALLEYS DUE TO VERY WARM AND DRY CONDITIONS WITH LOCALLY GUSTY ONSHORE WINDS AND
POTENTIAL VERTICAL PLUME GROWTH....

.DISCUSSION...
The upper level high pressure system centered over the four corners area
will weaken slightly and begin to shift eastward during the next few days,
leading to a gradual cooling trend across the district. There will still be
very warm and dry conditions today across interior sections of Southwest California.
High temperatures will generally range between 93 and 103 degrees today across the deserts,
as well as warmer mountain and interior valley locations. Minimum humidities will continue
to range between 5 and 20 percent across interior valleys, mountains, and deserts, with
the driest air focused across the Los Angeles county mountains and Antelope Valley.
Some subtropical mid level clouds will stream into portions of our forecast area through
Wednesday, with one band of mid level clouds focused across eastern Los Angeles county
today, and another band across San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties through
Wednesday. At this time, the thunderstorm threat is expected to remain south and east
of our forecast area, but could see some elevated cloud buildups over the local mountains
each afternoon through Wednesday. Onshore winds gusting between 20 and 30 mph
will occur across interior areas this afternoon and evening, with local gusts up to 40 mph
in the foothills of the Antelope Valley. The combination of very warm and dry conditions
with moderate onshore winds will bring elevated to brief critical fire weather conditions
across all interior areas today, especially the Highway 14 corridor from Santa
Clarita Valley to Antelope Valley, and the Los Angeles county mountains. Any fire ignitions
during the afternoon hours across interior wind sheltered areas will also have the
potential for significant vertical plume growth, with peak mixing heights today ranging
between 10,000 and 15,000 feet.

There will also be weak and localized sundowner winds with warm and dry conditions
each evening through Thursday across the western canyons of the Santa Ynez mountains
and Santa Barbara south coast, with gusts generally in the 25 to 35 mph range
(strongest near Gaviota). There is the potential for moderate sundowner winds this
weekend. Despite the gradual cooling trend that will take place Wednesday through
Friday, interior areas will remain fairly dry through this period with continued
gusty onshore winds in the afternoon and evening hours.
