Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Missoula MT
233 PM MDT Tue May 7 2019

.DISCUSSION...Widespread rain showers and scattered thunderstorms
will continue to develop and move from the northeast,to southeast
across the Northern Rockies this afternoon and evening. Some of
these thunderstorms, especially in western Montana, could become
strong, producing half inch size hail and gusty winds up to 35
mph. Activity will diminish quickly after sunset, but wouldn't
count out a couple stray showers produce a few lightning strikes
across southwest Montana and Lemhi County through Wednesday
morning.

A Canadian cold front will be sliding south across western Montana
Wednesday morning, that will bring cold enough air to produce
light snow for elevations above 6000 feet for southwest Montana
and Lemhi County. Areas with the best chance for seeing any snow
showers, will be Homestake and Lost Trail Passes, as well as
Gilmore Summit and Bannock Pass in Lemhi County. Little to no
accumulations are expected on the roadways, just be mindful of
reduced visibility if traveling in these areas.

Wednesday will be slightly cooler throughout the region, as northeast
winds usher in a cool Canadian airmass. Scattered rain showers
and thunderstorms are again expected, but not as widespread as
today.

Thursday a ridge will build over the forecast area. Expect sunny
skies and warming temperatures. It's been since Sept 9th last year
Missoula has hit 80 degrees. There is potential several areas
across western Montana will warm into the 80s. The lowest
elevations of north- central Idaho, such as Riggins and Pittsburg
Landing, could see temperatures into the low 90s those days.
