Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pendleton OR
215 PM PST Sat Feb 9 2019

.SHORT TERM...Upper-level low dropping south along the OR coast
today will weaken tonight as energy transfers to secondary low
developing over central OR and lifting NE into the Blues tomorrow.
Light snow currently falling over parts of far eastern WA/OR but
moderate to heavy snow is over central OR/WA as occluded frontal
zone continues to work east across the region through tonight.
Could be some convective elements to the snow leading to white out
conditions at times. As the low shifts northeast tomorrow, snow
will dissipate west to east but wrap-around snow in deformation
band lingering across northeast OR/southeast WA into the afternoon
before ending tomorrow evening. Strong winds around the north
side of the low is creating areas of blowing and drifting snow in
the Lower Columbia Basin, Kittitas/Yakima Valleys and north-
central OR. Gusts 30-50 mph expected through the evening will lead
to very hazardous to near impossible travel with greatly reduced
visibility. A Blizzard Warning remains effect for Yakima and
Kittitas valleys with strongest winds over the summits. Near
blizzard conditions possible as well over the Simcoe Highlands
and Benton County.

Another system will be on the heels of this one Sunday night and
Monday. This will be a quick hitter with mostly advisory level
snow but a few warnings may be needed. Believe there is just
enough gap in time to treat the two systems separately.

Very cold temps continue with highs in the upper teens to lower
30s and lows in the single digits to teens.

.LONG TERM...Monday night through Saturday. A series of weather
systems will continue to move through during the extended period
with temperatures remain cold with periods of snow. On Monday night
and Tuesday...models are similar with a low pressure system moving
south over Washington with a band of moisture in spreading a band
of moisture from southwest Oregon through central Washington through
Tuesday. Wind fields also show upslope flow into central Washington
through the period and may need highlights, but will wait until
current warnings and advisories end to avoid confusion. The system
moves through on Tuesday and Wednesday with deceasing moisture over
the area and a weak ridge to move through Thursday. The next system
will be moving into the area Thursday night and should keep a chance
of snow over most of the area through Saturday. 93
