897 FXUS63 KUNR 160958 AFDUNR Area Forecast Discussion For Western SD and Northeastern WY National Weather Service Rapid City SD 358 AM MDT Fri Jun 16 2017 .DISCUSSION...(Today Through Thursday) Issued at 330 AM MDT Fri Jun 16 2017 Broad upper low continues to drift across southern Canada north of Minnesota with near zonal flow from the Pacific Northwest, across the northern Rockies, and into the northern Plains. Weak shortwave energy is crossing the region at the moment, bringing some clouds and isolated sprinkles to the area. Temperatures at 3am are currently in the 50s and 60s with light winds. Today...Upper flow remains nearly zonal as weak shortwave energy continues to cross the forecast area. Some very light rain showers will be possible across northwest SD this morning. Models are showing a very weak 700mb trof crossing the area by early afternoon. That combined with peak heating should enhance shower chances across the Black Hills and northwest SD, with an isolated thunderstorm or two possible by mid to late afternoon. Highs will again be in the upper 70s to upper 80s. Some breezy winds will be possible across northwest SD and also across southern portions of Campbell County in WY today. Tonight...A stronger shortwave is progged to cross southern Montana and northern Wyoming late tonight, along with a cold front. This will bring the best chance of precipitation to the area for some time. Right now the best chances of showers and isolated storms will be over northeast Wyoming...the northern Black Hills...and into northwest South Dakota after midnight. Lows will be in the 50s. Saturday...Zonal flow continues as the upper shortwave shifts east of the area during the morning. Some lingering rain showers and isolated thunderstorms will be possible from the Black Hills and east during the morning, with precip shifting east by the afternoon. Cooler temperatures are expected behind the cold front, with highs in the upper 60s to upper 70s. Northwest winds will be breezy across much of the area. Lows Saturday night will fall into the 50s, with some 40s across northeast WY and the Black Hills. Sunday into next week...Strong upper ridging will build back into the region with generally dry weather expected. Mainly 70s are expected on Sunday, with temperatures warming into the 80s and 90s by Monday and Tuesday. The warm temperatures will stick around through Thursday, with slightly cooler temperatures by Friday. Low temperatures will warm back to the 50s and 60s for much of next week. .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS Through 06Z Friday Night) Issued At 1059 PM MDT Thu Jun 15 2017 VFR conditions will persist through today. Isolated thunderstorms are possible this afternoon over the Black Hills.
