Quiet year for Skunk River at Ames

Posted: 12 Aug 2021 05:35 AM

One of the tell-tale signs of a year dominated by drought is for limited flows of water through area waterways. Such is the case for the South Skunk River through Ames as observed by the USGS/City of Ames sensor along US-30. The featured chart presents IEM computed daily max river stage values based on preliminary data over the past 12 months. Any calendar day values over the "action" flood stage would be colorized in this chart and you can see that none of them are! Some recent rains have generated very small responses to the stage reading, but nothing much of significance.
