Blizzard Warnings per Year

Posted: 22 Jan 2018 05:33 AM

Blizzard Warnings are up for portions of northern and northwestern Iowa. A powerful storm system, one that has been rare so far this winter, will bring snow and blowing snow creating for whiteout conditions over the area. Snow fall totals are expected to rapidly decrease further south of the main impact area, so you could likely drive from normal winter conditions and into a blizzard over few 10s of miles. How common are Blizzard Warnings? The featured map displays the yearly average number of Blizzard Warnings issued since 2007. The highest frequencies are found over north central Iowa, where the topography is generally flat and mostly treeless, which both help to allow the blizzard criterion to be obtained.
