Our snowy and cold winter has turned into a foggy and rainy spring. This is resulting in scenes like the featured photo courtesy of Scott Lincoln. Minor flooding occurred yesterday as an ice jam caused water to quickly rise. Ice jams were also reported in other parts of the state. More of these events are expected as heavy rainfall arrives today and into this weekend.
The Racoon River near Adel is full of ice and tree chunks from the recent rapid snow melt, river thaw, and tree damage from recent winter storms. These chunks got jammed underneath a bridge causing water to back-up and flood in the area. This scene was common from Iowa to the Northeastern US as winter quickly transitioned to spring. You can find some more images and a movie of the ice flow here.
