The weekly US Drought Monitor update was released on Thursday and further degradation was shown with the "D3 Extreme" drought category introduced over west central Iowa. This is the first D3 category over Iowa since 2018. The featured chart shows the percentage of the state covered by each of the drought categories since the last D3 in 2018. The good news is that chances of rain continue to be in the forecast, but the most significant rains are forecast to fall just outside of the state.
