One of the most significant severe weather outbreaks to affect southeast Wyoming and the western Nebraska Panhandle in the past 30 years occurred on the afternoon and early evening of Monday 12 June 2017. Numerous reports of tornadoes, very large hail, and damaging winds were received by the National Weather Service. As the afternoon progressed into the evening, severe storms increased in overage and intensity for areas along and east of Interstate 25 moving north and northeast across the eastern Wyoming Plains into the western Nebraska Panhandle. Although 8-10 tornadoes have been confirmed thus far with this outbreak, additional touchdowns likely occurred over open rural areas with no damage observed. Update #4 for this event adds information for one additional tornado touchdown that occurred in southern Banner county. Also adjusted the start and end time for the tornado that occurred 9 miles north of Bushnell to reflect more accurate first hand acounts. .Northeast Goshen County Wyoming and West Central Sioux County Nebraska Tornado... Rating: EF-2 Estimated Peak Wind: 111-135 MPH Path Length /Statute/: Approximately 25 Miles Path Width /Maximum/: 500 Yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 2 Start Date: 6/12/2017 Start Time: 509 PM MDT Start Location: 15 miles north of Torrington WY Start Lat/Lon: 42.2760 / -104.1957 End Date: 6/12/2017 End Time: 601 PM MDT End Location: 8 miles south southwest of Harrison NE End_Lat/Lon: 42.5830 / -103.9198 Significant tornado damage was noted at a ranch several miles north of Torrington, WY just west of the Union Pacific railway line. Significant damage consistent with EF-2 intensity winds was to the main ranch residence and surrounding barns was noted. Several three quarter ton pickup trucks were vaulted several yards by tornadic winds, with several horse trailers rolled 50 to 100 yards and severely damaged. Several horses at this location were seriously injured with 3 horses killed. One person in the residence received minor head injuries. The tornado continued northeast moving across the Nebraska state line and at 535 PM did significant damage to a homestead 13 miles southwest of Harrison. Damage consistent with EF-2 intensity was noted by the survey team to the residence, as well as to surrounding trees and outbuildings. One resident at this location was treated and released at a local hospital for injuries incurred from flying debris in the home. The tornado continued northeast before lifting to the south southwest of Harrison NE before reaching Highway 29. .Carpenter WY Tornado... Rating: EF-2 Estimated Peak Wind: 111-135 MPH Path Length /Statute/: Approx 8 Miles Path Width /Maximum/: 200 Yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 6/12/2017 Start Time: 446 PM MDT Start Location: 4 miles southeast of Carpenter WY Start Lat/Lon: 41.0037 / -104.3037 End Date: 6/12/2017 End Time: 508 PM MDT End Location: 3 miles north northwest of Carpenter WY End_Lat/Lon: 41.0605 / -104.3236 The tornado crossed over from northern Colorado approximately 4 miles southeast of Carpenter WY. It continued moving towards the north northwest crossing mostly open farmland, paralleling county road 151 where it impacted 4 residences. The most significant damage observed by the NWS assessment team was to 2 residences along County Road 151, where a semi-attached garage was completely destroyed by EF-2 intensity winds. Damage also was observed to single family roof structure. Additionally, numerous power poles were snapped along with a ruptured power line. .Eastern Laramie County Tornado... Rating: EF-1 Estimated Peak Wind: 86-110 MPH Path Length /Statute/: 1 mile Path Width /Maximum/: 80 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 6/12/2017 Start Time: 505 PM MDT Start Location: 10 miles south southwest Pine Bluffs WY Start Lat/Lon: 41.0296 -104.1333 End Date: 6/12/2017 End Time: 512 PM MDT End Location: 9 miles south southwest Pine Bluffs WY End_Lat/Lon: 41.0482 / -104.1181 This short lived tornado touched down just north of the Colorado state line to the southwest of Pine Bluffs along County Road 161 moving northeast before lifted southwest of Pine Bluffs. A fifth-wheel horse trailer was lofted into the air for 50 yards sustaining significant damage. A small farm outbuilding was also destroyed. .Bayard NE Tornado... Rating: EF-1 Estimated Peak Wind: 86-110 MPH Path Length /Statute/: 1 mile Path Width /Maximum/: 50 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 6/12/2017 Start Time: 713 PM MDT Start Location: Northeast Side of Bayard NE Start Lat/Lon: 41.76486 / -103.32235 End Date: 6/12/2017 End Time: 718 PM MDT End Location: .5 mile east of Bayard NE End_Lat/Lon: 41.76551 / -103.31774 A brief tornado touchdown occurred on the east side of Bayard NE producing damage consistent of EF-1 to the Chimney Rock Villa Nursing Home. The tornado lifted quickly as it moved east of Bayard. Many irrigation pivots were overturned within 1-2 miles west of Bayard and damage on the west side of town was consistent with straight line winds. .North Bayard to south of Alliance NE Tornado... Rating: EF-2 Estimated Peak Wind: 111-135 MPH Path Length /Statute/: 39 miles (discontinuous) Path Width /Maximum/: 500 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 6/12/2017 Start Time: 719 PM MDT Start Location: 4 miles north northwest of Bayard NE Start Lat/Lon: 41.82187 / -103.34078 End Date: 6/12/2017 End Time: 825 PM MDT End Location: 8 miles east southeast of Alliance NE End_Lat/Lon: 42.07373 / -102.70337 A long-track discontinuous tornado path was surveyed by NWS damage team, initially touching down northwest of the Highway 26 and L62A intersection 4 miles north northwest of Bayard NE. The tornado continued east along and north of L62A. Significant damage consistent with a EF-2 tornado was observed to a farmhouse approximately 6 miles northeast of Bayard. The house was severely damaged with roof taken off and numerous exterior walls destroyed. A detached garage was swept clean with several trucks slid from their original location. A flat bed and horse trailer was lofted 100 yards from their original position. Trees to the west of the residence were denuded consistent with EF-2 strength tornado. This storm produced additional damage some of which was due to straight-line winds along L62A, with damage to a steel farm outbuilding, rolled mobile home, rolled semi tractor trailer, rolled center pivots, and continued damage to trees. The storm lifted northeast near Highway 385 with additional damage surveyed in the Angora area, including downed power poles and train derailment. This storm continued northeast producing additional EF-1 to ranch outbuildings and a warehouse at the Alliance Airport, located 4 miles southeast of the city. The storm continued east to the Box Butte/Sheridan County line. .11 Miles Northeast of Cheyenne Tornado... Rating: EF-0 Estimated Peak Wind: 65-85 MPH Path Length /Statute/: 0.5 miles Path Width /Maximum/: 80 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 6/12/2017 Start Time: 440 PM MDT Start Location: 11 miles northeast of Cheyenne Start Lat/Lon: 41.30446 / -104.68582 End Date: 6/12/2017 End Time: 444 PM MDT End Location: 11.5 miles northeast of Cheyenne End_Lat/Lon: 41.34456 / -104.68176 This brief tornado touchdown occurred 11 miles northeast of Cheyenne. Damage to irrigation center pivot was observed along with window and roof damage to a rural residence. Minor damage was also noted to outbuildings. .9 Miles North of Bushnell Tornado... Rating: EF-1 Estimated Peak Wind: 86-110 MPH Path Length /Statute/: 1 mile Path Width /Maximum/: 80 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 6/12/2017 Start Time: 601 PM MDT Start Location: 9 miles north northeast of Bushnell Start Lat/Lon: 41.36826 / -103.88183 End Date: 6/12/2017 End Time: 608 PM MDT End Location: 10 miles north of Bushnell End_Lat/Lon: 41.37552 / -103.89771 Another brief tornado touchdown. Roof of old barn was tore off and exterior walls collapsing. Auger cart and auger were tipped. Power poles broke near the farm. Start and end times were adjusted based on eye witness accounts. .7 Miles Southeast of Harrisburg Tornado... Rating: EF-1 Estimated Peak Wind: 86-110 MPH Path Length /Statute/: 4 miles Path Width /Maximum/: 100 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 6/12/2017 Start Time: 630 PM MDT Start Location: 7 miles southeast of Harrisburg Start Lat/Lon: 41.48689 / -103.63999 End Date: 6/12/2017 End Time: 640 PM MDT End Location: 7 miles east of Harrisburg End_Lat/Lon: 41.54254 / -103.60804 Short-lived tornado touched down east of Highway 71 southeast of Harrisburg Nebraska. A Calving barn was moved about 10 yards from its original location. One horse was killed with several others injured. Several power poles broke. Grain bin pushed off its foundation, landing east into grove of trees. Pole barn rolled with only a few walls left standing. .Southern Banner County Tornado... Rating: EF-UNKNOWN Estimated Peak Wind: UNKNOWN Path Length /Statute/: 1 mile Path Width /Maximum/: UNKNOWN Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 6/12/2017 Start Time: 612 PM MDT Start Location: 13 miles southwest of Harrisburg Start Lat/Lon: 41.3973 / -103.9655 End Date: 6/12/2017 End Time: 640 PM MDT End Location: 13 miles southwest of Harrisburg End_Lat/Lon: 41.4048 / -103.9768 An eye witness account of a short-lived tornado touched down near County Road 9 along the Banner and Kimball County lines.
