TS Gita will continue to move 22 mph southward away from American Samoa tonight. However, strong, potentially damaging northwest winds will continue tonight and Saturday as recent scatterometer data shows a swath of 35 to 40 mph along the northern flank of the departing tropical cyclone that will continue to impact American and Independent Samoa tonight. In addition to the winds, there is a potential for additional heavy rain and strong monsoon winds through Sunday, as another tropical disturbance (TD 08F/98P) near Fiji moves closer and brushes south of Samoa on Saturday. Models show this tropical disturbance weakening and merging into Gita as it moves away from the area. Any additional heavy rain that falls on already saturated grounds could cause flash flooding through the weekend. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for Samoa through Sunday. .Long term... .MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY...A wet and windy monsoonal flow will continue through Monday as west to northwest winds are expected to prevail, bringing periods of heavy showers and thunderstorms, and occasionally strong gusts. Winds are expected to diminish Tuesday and Wednesday potentially becoming light and variable by Thursday, with decreasing showers also expected. && .Marine...Latest Wave Watch guidance brings extreme wave heights to the area through Saturday due to Tropical Storm Gita and another tropical disturbance near Fiji.
