Reds and Blues

Posted: 02 Nov 2016 05:35 AM

With the 2016 Election less than a week away and a lot of talk of red vs blue states, it is appropriate to check in on the battle between the reds and blues with the featured chart. The chart displays the daily percentage of NWS reported first order climate stations that reported a high temperature above average (red) or below average (blue). An important note is that these stations are not evenly distributed over the CONUS, so it is not a direct proxy for areal coverage. For much of this year and especially recently, the reds (above average temps) have dominated. For 1 November, many record high temperatures were set over the country. It will be another week or more, before substantial cold weather arrives.
