The featured chart shows average daily 4 inch soil temperatures from the Ames ISUAG site for 2006. A decreasing solar angle, shortening days, and cooler air temperatures allows the soil to cool off climatologically after August until about March when the radiative balance switches to a positive gain for the ground and heating can occur.
