Average 4 inch soil temperatures have crept below 50 degrees and will continue its downward march to below freezing this winter. The ground has nothing on the surface to protect it from loosing lots of heat during these fall nights. Interestingly, once we get a snow cover, 4 inch soil temps can actually rise some, since the snow acts as a blanket. Lets not think of snow just yet...
