July 2019 temperatures averaged slightly below normal. Precipitation was variable but near normal. There were several days of severe weather. In the area, there were 10 days on which severe weather was reported, which was the most in any month since July 2013. The first half of the month generally had temperatures averaging below normal. Many areas had their first 90F day on July 13, during a period with slightly above normal temperatures. Thunderstorms in the Havre are caused winds to 92 mph at Saddle Butte on the 14th. Hail to 1.25- inches was reported at Townsend. Cooling occurred by the 16th, with highs in the 70s through the 21st. It was quite windy on the 18th, with peak gusts of 56 mph at Cut Bank and 52 mph at Great Falls. Daily wind averages were 20-22 mph in the area, which were record highs for the date. The area's lowest temperatures occurred on the 20th and 21st, on which several record low temperatures were set. Elk Park and Gates Park dropped to 25F on the 20th. Great Falls fell to 38F on the 21st, which was their coolest July temperature since 1999. Temperatures warmed rapidly with the area's warmest temperature on the 23rd, when Loma reached 101F. Thunderstorms along a cold front produced gusts to 63 mph at Havre. Gusty winds on the 24th produced winds to 72 mph at Deep Creek. Great Falls had a gust of 60 mph.. Warm conditions continued through the end of the month. #### Temperature #### Temperatures averaged up to 1.5 degrees below normal in July. The warmest average was 71.0F at Armells Creek (Fergus). Lewistown reported the greatest negative departure from normal at 1.4F below normal. The warmest temperature of 101F was reported at Loma on the 23rd. The coolest temperature was 25F at Elk Park and Gates Park on the 20th. The area average temperature for July was 65.0F, or 1.0F below. This was the 33rd coolest July of record and coolest since 2010. For the water-year the average temperature has been 35.9F (2.9F below normal) and the coolest since 2010. The calendar year through July has averaged 37.6F (4.5F below normal) and the 3rd coolest of record. This ranks as the coolest since 1975. The crop-year (Apr- Jul) average temperature is 53.3F (0.9F below normal) is the 27th coolest of record and coolest since 2011. Most locations had their coolest July since 2010. #### Precipitation #### For precipitation, rainfall amounts were near average most areas. The driest area was along the hi-line. The highest reported amount was 3.80-inches at Spur Park, while Boulder reported 3.08-inches. Some areas over the hi-line recorded less than a quarter of an inch for the month. Dillon has had their driest water-year since 2014. The area's average monthly precipitation was 1.33-inches, the 59th wettest of record. For the water-year, the average has been 12.77- inches, the 57th wettest of record. For the calendar year, an average of 10.60-inches has fallen, which is the 50th wettest of record and wettest since 2011. For the crop year (Apr-Jul), an average of 7.18-inches has fallen, which is 0.36-inches below normal. #### Wind ### On average, this was the 11th calmest July of record. All areas had wind averages below normal. The windiest locations were at Deep Creek RAWS (13.2-mph) and Sweet Grass (11.0-mph). The area's highest gust was 92 mph during a thunderstorm on the 14th just southeast of Havre. The area average wind speed was 7.6-mph, 0.3-mph below normal. This was the 11th calmest of record. For the water-year, the average was 8.3-mph, 0.8- mph below normal. This is the calmest such period of record, exceeding the previous calmest water-year-to-date of 8.6-mph set in 2010. The calendar year average wind speed is 8.6-mph, the 2nd calmest of record. For the crop year (Apr-Jul) the average wind speed is 8.4 mph (0.9-mph below normal), the 4th calmest of record. Wind records at Bozeman and Dillon began in 1948, Cut Bank and Lewistown in 1938, Great Falls in 1939, Havre in 1889, Helena in 1880 and West Yellowstone in 2010. Bozeman MSU temperature began in 1892 and precipitation in 1868 (Fort Ellis). The normal period for all elements is 1981 to 2010.
