...NWS DAMAGE SURVEY FOR 07/11/18 TORNADO EVENT NEAR THE RED
LAKES...

.OVERVIEW...Several supercell thunderstorms tracked through 
northwestern Minnesota the evening of July 11. Funnel clouds 
were reported forming over Lower Red Lake, with one touching down 
over the water and moving onshore near Ponemah. This cell also 
produced another touchdown on land shortly before moving into the 
Upper Red Lake. Another thunderstorm produced a tornado over the 
eastern portion of Lower Red Lake, which moved onshore and produced 
damage near Saum.

This tornado touched down just offshore over Lower Red Lake. It came
onshore roughly 2 miles west of Ponemah and continued to track inland 
to the east-northeast, for another mile or so, before dissipating about 
1 mile northwest of Ponemah by 9:15 PM CDT. Large poplar and ash tree
limbs were broken down along with path.

This tornado touched down and tracked along and across the BIA25
road for about 2 miles to near the south shore of Upper Red Lake, 
5 miles east-northeast of Ponemah, by 9:28 PM CDT. Trees were torn 
up quite violently and debris was spread across nearly a mile of 
BIA25.

Report and video posted to social media showing contact and 
eastward tracking beginning over open water on Lower Red Lake.
This tornado tracked onshore about 4 NNW of Battle River and 
continued on an intermittent east-northeast track for nearly 5 miles,
crossing Beltrami County Road 23 about 4 miles north of Saum, and
ending by 9:42 PM CDT. Large poplars and pines were snapped
or uprooted.
