The NWS in coordination with Amherst County Officials and Amherst County Schools with access to a drone, as well as private citizens in the area, has analyzed additional data collected over the past week and determined that a separate tornado touched down to the north of the path of a longer track tornado that had begun near Lynchburg. Here are more specifics: Start Location...3.0 mi WNW of Lowesville in Amherst County VA End Location...4.0 mi NW of Lowesville in Amherst County VA Date...April 15, 2018 Estimated Time...738 to 741 PM EDT Maximum EF-Scale Rating...EF0 Estimated Maximum Wind Speed...85 mph Maximum Path Width...75 yards Path Length...1.5 miles Beginning Lat/Lon...37.724 / -79.123 Ending Lat/Lon...37.742 / -79.135 * Fatalities...0 * Injuries...0 ...Summary... This tornado touched down on the north side of Piney Mountain and just west of Indian Creek Road in a forested area, and tracked toward the northwest roughly paralleling Indian Creek Road until it finally crossed near the west end of the road and went up the ridge on the other side but only a short distance. The damage as seen in photos from the air and the ground was considered to be EF0, mostly in the form of uprooted trees. The damage path was about 1.5 miles long, and while difficult to tell, the width was likely only around 75 yards wide at the most.
