569 FXUS64 KLUB 211738 AFDLUB Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lubbock TX 1238 PM CDT Tue Aug 21 2018 .AVIATION... Haze from smoke that has been carried in from thousands of miles away did drop visibilities to MVFR levels at all the terminals this morning. The visibility has since improved to VFR, which should continue into this evening, though there could be another bout of MVFR conditions early Wednesday (confidence in this isn't very high). Aside from the smoke, a rogue shower or two will be possible in the region later this afternoon, but any activity should remain well south and/or west of the terminals. Lastly, overnight storms affecting the Panhandles will likely remain north of the terminals, though they could send an outflow/wind shift through the northern TAF sites early Wednesday morning. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 305 AM CDT Tue Aug 21 2018/ DISCUSSION... The upper level trough and surface low over the Ohio Valley will continue to move northeast towards the Great Lakes today. Smoke from fires in the Pacific Northwest has gotten caught up in flow extending from this low and has reached the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles. Smoke should exit to the east as ridging builds in overhead today. The HRRR-smoke model shows smoke at 6000 ft AGL to exit late this morning while the near surface smoke model is a bit delayed with the smoke moving off to the east as surface winds shift to the south late this afternoon. Other than the smoke and haze today, this week will be fairly quiet. Ridging will build in today with an upper level high centered over Texas for the rest of the workweek. Monsoonal moisture will wrap around the high but any precip chances should stay well to our north. High pressure overhead and south to southwest surface winds will lead to efficient warming with highs 5 to 10 degrees above normal. The center of the high will move off to the east this weekend which should allow temperatures to cool a few degrees. && .LUB WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... None. && $$ 08/23
