541 NOUS44 KBMX 251025 PNSBMX ALZ011>015-017>050-252230- Public Information Statement National Weather Service Birmingham AL 525 AM CDT Mon Jun 25 2018 ...INFORMATION THAT CAN HELP YOU BEAT THE HEAT... The National Weather Service will issue a Heat Advisory if certain criteria are met. A Heat Advisory normally means that air temperatures are forecast to be much above normal. In the Southern United States during the summer months, humidity levels can make it feel even more oppressive. The heat index is the temperature the body feels when the effects of heat (air temperature) and humidity are combined. Air temperatures are taken in the shade, so heat index values will be even higher when you are exposed to direct sunlight. For Central Alabama a Heat Advisory is issued when air temperatures are forecast to reach 103 degrees or higher, or if the heat index is forecast to reach 105 degrees or higher. ...HEAT SAFETY TIPS... Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun's rays. If you must work outdoors, take frequent breaks in shaded areas or air conditioned buildings. Never leave children or pets alone in vehicles. Slow down, stay indoors, and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning.
