Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT
1013 AM MDT Fri May 19 2017

.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will temporarily build into the area
later today into tomorrow, before another, weaker trough clips
northern Utah on Sunday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...The combination of the right entrance region to a
jetlet over central Utah and weak 700mb directional convergence
across the Great Salt Lake and west desert region is producing
light precipitation over the Oquirrh Mtns and Stansbury Range and
across higher elevations farther south in Tooele, Utah, and Juab
Counties this morning. Updated the forecast to include isolated
showers for this morning in these locations. Although stratus
clouds stretch farther south all the way to Cedar City, any
precipitation which falls from this deck will be spotty and not
expected to be measurable as the 700mb flow becomes more
divergent.

The only other update this morning was to improve the sky cover
over Kane County as the northerly flow is down sloping and clouds
have been dissipating, so have gone with mostly sunny skies there.

For this afternoon, several models are pointing at convection
developing over the northwest and northern portions of the CWA,
but inspecting recent forecast soundings from several models this
looks overdone as the positive area is very minimal so have
backed off from chance to slight chance and this may be overdone
as far as thunderstorms are concerned.

Rest of package in good shape.

&&

.AVIATION...Some lake-enhanced showers are currently passing in the
vicinity KSLC, the only impacts from these will be brief periods of
cigs at or just below 7k ft. These showers should move
away/dissipate in the next couple of hours and ceilings should
remain above 7k ft for remainder of the day. Northwest winds will
prevail until the normal diurnal southerly wind shift around 03-04Z.
