340 FXUS62 KKEY 291546 AFDKEY Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 1046 AM EST Mon Jan 29 2024 ...New DISCUSSION, MARINE, AVIATION... .DISCUSSION... Issued at 1045 AM EST Mon Jan 29 2024 This morning's surface analysis places a strong cold front now clearing southeast of the Bahamas, with elongated high pressure building in its wake across the Tennessee Valley and the Southeast. The 12z sounding at KEY sampled a dry adiabatic, well- mixed layer extending from the surface up to around the 850 mb isobaric level, capped by a formidable 4-6 degree Celsius temperature inversion. Skies are partly cloudy across the island chain, with intervals of stratocumulus decks occasionally passing in the mean steering flow northwesterlies. Despite decent amounts of solar insolation, temperatures should struggle to climb out of the 60s for highs today at most communities owed to the cold advection associated with the backed 0-3 km wind profile. Outside of taking down the Small Craft Advisory in the Florida Bay due to slightly under performing winds in that marine zone, no changes proposed for this late morning update package. && .MARINE... Issued at 1045 AM EST Mon Jan 29 2024 A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for the Bayside and Gulfside waters, Hawk Channel, the Straits of Florida, and the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, including the Dry Tortugas. While winds have slackened below Small Craft Advisory levels in the Florida Bay, Small Craft Should continue to Exercise Caution. From synopsis, strong northerly breezes will gradually slacken this afternoon through Tuesday night. A reinforcing cold front will push through the Florida Keys Wednesday night, followed by a brief freshening of breezes. Slackened, northerly breezes are expected Thursday through Friday. && .AVIATION... (15Z TAFS) Issued at 1045 AM EST Mon Jan 29 2024 Gradually clearing sky cover and slackening winds will define the TAF period at both island terminals. The frequency of surface gusts will slacken to negligible after sunset. A very deep layer of dry moisture will allow minimal to no showers across the island chain. && .CLIMATE... On this day in 1991, the daily record high temperature of 86F and the daily record warm low temperature of 76F were both recorded in Key West. Temperature records for Key West in January date back to 1873. && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS... Key West 69 60 67 59 / 0 0 0 0 Marathon 68 60 68 59 / 0 0 0 0 && .KEY WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
