Elevated Excessive Cold Risk. Limited River Flooding Risk Due to Ice Jams. DISCUSSION... A winter storm will impact the area Friday into Saturday. Several inches of accumulating snow in combination with strong winds may result in dangerous travel across the area into Saturday, though considerable uncertainty remains regarding the storm track and rain/snow line location. The heaviest snow is expected north of I-80, with lower totals near Lake Michigan. Strong northwest winds may gust between 40 mph and 50 mph Friday night causing significant blowing and drifting snow. These strong winds will also allow for high waves on Lake Michigan and the potential for minor lake shore flooding, mainly along the northwest Indiana shoreline. Much colder air will spread across the region this weekend and continue into next week, producing dangerously cold wind chills from 20 below to 30 below zero. River ice is expected to rapidly build up on area rivers Sunday into early next week as a much colder arctic airmass moves into the area. This will bring a threat for ice jam related flooding on area rivers into next week. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT... Spotter activation will not be necessary through tonight. $$ LMZ740>745-121000- Winthrop Harbor to Wilmette Harbor IL- Wilmette Harbor to Northerly Island IL- Northerly Island to Calumet Harbor IL- Calumet Harbor IL to Gary IN-Gary to Burns Harbor IN- Burns Harbor to Michigan City IN- 348 AM CST Thu Jan 11 2024 This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of the Illinois nearshore waters of Lake Michigan and the Indiana nearshore waters of Lake Michigan. .DAY ONE...Today and Tonight.
