112 FXUS66 KMTR 272325 AFDMTR Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco CA 425 PM PDT Thu Jul 27 2023 ...New AVIATION, MARINE... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 200 PM PDT Thu Jul 27 2023 Summer-like weather conditions to prevail through the weekend and into early next week with temperatures near seasonal averages. Expect typical ebb and flow of coastal clouds each night/morning giving way to sunny afternoon conditions across the interior. Breezy onshore flow will also occur each afternoon. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Friday) Issued at 200 PM PDT Thu Jul 27 2023 Interior temperatures are running up to 6 deg F cooler compared to 24 hours ago while coastal areas are experiencing only +/- 3 deg F. With that, stratus is more patchy this afternoon out over the Pacific, around the San Francisco Peninsula and locally around the Monterey Peninsula. That said, these temperatures are generally near seasonal averages with similar conditions expected to wrap up the workweek. Overnight, look for stratus to fill back along the coast and locally into the adjacent coastal valleys, similar to previous nights. The marine layer is anticipated to deepen slightly overnight and into the upcoming weekend as an upper level low off of the British Columbia coast impacts the Pacific Northwest. Afternoon temperatures on Friday look to range from the upper 50s to upper 60s near the coast/bays and 70s to 80s in the interior. With high pressure still over the Desert Southwest, interior portions of southern San Benito and Monterey counties will warm into the 90s to near 100 deg F. These warmer temperatures are a result of the persistent high pressure over the Four Corners region. && .LONG TERM... (Friday through Wednesday) Issued at 252 AM PDT Thu Jul 27 2023 The long term outlook doesn't offer too much change from prior discussions. Our CWA will be sitting between an upper level trough extending from Western Canada and into NorCal while high pressure continues to dominate the southern US. Initially, the trough will be slightly more dominant now into the start of the weekend as we will be in a cooling trend...however, the high seems to strengthen slightly by Sunday and build back towards CA which is forecast to bump up temperatures on Sunday into Monday. Then the high drifts eastward again allowing the trough to our north to put the region back into a slight cooling trend. Regardless of these subtle synoptic changes, most locations within our CWA will only notice minor oscillations in the temperatures for the long term outlook. && .AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 424 PM PDT Thu Jul 27 2023 VFR lasts into the evening followed by IFR CIGs building around portions of the Monterey Bay and the immediate coast. LIFR CIGs will build along the coast later into the night with pockets of fog. Lower clouds will be slow to enter the SF Bay, but will cause IFR CIGs for OAK and inconsistent IFR at SFO into Friday morning. Cloud cover thins in the late morning Friday with light winds becoming moderate to breezy that afternoon. Vicinity of SFO...VFR through the late night. The breezier winds will reduce this evening and become moderate through much of Friday morning. Scattered low clouds build overnight with moments of IFR expected in the early and mid morning. Cloud cover thins before Friday afternoon as another round of breezy westerly winds build. SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO. Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR into the evening. IFR CIGs are expected to build in the evening for MRY and overnight for SNS with winds weakening. LIFR CIGs build into the late night along the coast and MRY with some pockets of fog. VFR returns in the Friday afternoon with moderate westerly winds. && .MARINE... (Tonight through next Tuesday) Issued at 424 PM PDT Thu Jul 27 2023 Surface high pressure over the eastern Pacific will result in gusty northwest winds continuing over the coastal waters through early next week, resulting in wind waves creating hazardous sea conditions for small crafts. Gusty afternoon and evening winds will redevelop daily over the San Francisco Bay north of the Bay Bridge to the Delta as well as across the Monterey Bay. Light southerly swell mixing with a northwesterly swell will persist through early next week. && .MTR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... CA...None.
