268 FXHW60 PHFO 212003 AFDHFO Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Honolulu HI 1003 AM HST Fri Apr 21 2023 .SYNOPSIS... Light southeast winds will continue into next week, allowing sea breezes to bring clouds and showers over the island interiors each afternoon. A weak front will move over Kauai Monday night, then stall and dissipate over the central part of the state through midweek. && .DISCUSSION... Visible satellite and radar show couple of areas of clouds and showers remain from a weakening trough just northeast of Hawaii. A north to south oriented band is brining scattered clouds and showers to the windward side of the Big Island this morning. A second area of clouds and showers is impacting the windward side of Oahu. High pressure is centered far northeast of the state while low pressure system is located far to the northwest, resulting in light southeast winds across the state today. The trough the northeast will also acting to weaken the background southeast wind flow through Friday before lifting north of the state this weekend. Winds will continue to stay light and southeasterly as the front to the northwest approaches. Expect lingering low clouds and showers over the windward Big Island today along the aforementioned band, which will slowly shift northwest up the island chain to Maui County and Oahu Friday before clearing the islands. Showers associated with this band will focus over windward and southeast slopes. In addition, the light winds will allow for sea breezes to set up over all islands resulting in cloud build ups and showers across the island interiors each afternoon before clearing at night with this pattern continuing into early next week. The weakened front is expected to arrive on Kauai Monday night with light to moderate trade winds overrunning this feature. The front will stall and dissipate over the central portion of the state through at least midweek with relatively light trade winds focusing the low clouds and showers over windward slopes. && .AVIATION... Light to moderate east to southeast winds will allow afternoon sea breezes and overnight land breezes to form over each island for the next couple of days. Passing showers are forecast today as a weak trough drifts westward across the region, as well as inland clouds and a few showers with the sea breeze and daytime heating. Brief MVFR conditions are possible within these showers. No AIRMETs are currently in effect. Will monitor for possible AIRMET Sierra this afternoon if showers/low clouds become more widespread. && .MARINE... A trough just north of the state will help support light to moderate east to southeast winds across the area into Saturday. Some of the typically windier waters around Maui County and the Big Island may see winds exceeding the Small Craft Advisory (SCA) threshold on Saturday. Winds will ease again late Saturday through Monday as front approaches from the northwest. Light trade winds will return from Tuesday to Wednesday as a high pressure builds behind the weakening front. A boost in surf along north and west facing is expected this weekend as the current short period west-northwest swell fades and a new long period swell northwest swell builds in tomorrow morning. The new swell should peak Saturday night, but only to be reinforced by a medium period northwest swell Sunday afternoon and Monday. Surf along south facing shores will also see a boost this weekend. A new long period south swell will arrive tonight and peak over the weekend near the summertime average before slowly declining through the middle of next week. Surf along east facing shores will remain small through the middle of next week under the lighter winds. && .HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
