291 FXUS65 KPIH 141845 AFDPIH Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 1245 PM MDT Sat May 14 2022 .SHORT TERM...Today and Sunday. A weak disturbance is moving through zonal flow aloft today. Winds will be breezy to moderate especially across the Arco desert where a wind advisory is in place for gusts of 45 mph. A lake wind advisory is in place this afternoon for the American Falls reservoir where southwest winds of 20 mph sustained are expected at least a few hours this afternoon. The mostly likely time is from 2 to 6 pm. High pressure ridging aloft quickly builds in tonight. Sunday expect a relatively warm day with daytime temperatures around 8 to 12 degrees above normal. Expect near 80 degrees across our southwest valleys and 70s in valleys elsewhere with mid to upper 60s for the mountains. The high pressure quickly breaks down as a trough moves through the Central mountains in the early evening. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has the Central mountains in a marginal outlook for severe thunderstorms. For the Central mountains expect scattered showers and thunderstorms bringing a chance of small hail and strong outflow winds. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible for the Snake Plain and the Southern Hills/Albion mountains Sunday evening as well. Wyatt .LONG TERM...Monday through Saturday. Will start out very warm with a chance for thunderstorms on Monday with high temperatures near 80 in the Snake River Plain and 60s and 70s in the mountains. Expect the mild temperatures to continue Tuesday and Wednesday with dry conditions expected and highs in the 60s mountains and 70s valleys. An upper level system with a cold front will move through eastern Idaho Wednesday night and expect much colder conditions Thursday through Saturday with periods of rain and snow. Snow levels expected to drop all the way down to 5 to 6 thousand feet at the end of the week. High temperatures in the period generally expected to be in the 40s mountains and 50s valleys. Expect windy conditions as well with the passage of the front Wednesday through Friday with Thursday likely to be the windiest day. Sustained speeds well above 20 mph are possible. GK && .AVIATION... Have rain showers in the DIJ area and have vicinity showers and thunder there through sunset. Expect some development near SUN as well but for the most part will be widespread VFR conditions through Sunday morning. Expect 15 to 25 knot sustained winds at PIH, IDA and BYI as well and around 15 knots at DIJ also through the 03Z time frame and they should die down overnight.
