254 FXUS64 KMOB 221826 AFDMOB Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mobile AL 1226 PM CST Wed Dec 22 2021 .NEAR TERM /Now Through Thursday/...The near term will be dry through the period with clear skies. Aloft, the trough located over the southeast CONUS continues to track off to the east- northwest through the period. Northwest flow aloft then settles into the region as ridging begins building into the region behind this feature through Thursday. At the surface, high pressure builds into the area from the west, tracking east across the region through Thursday. As a result, clear skies and light winds are expected through the period. As the surface high moves east, surface winds will shift from north-northeasterly today, to more east-southeasterly by Thursday afternoon. For temperatures through the period, expect highs to range from the upper 50s to around 60 degrees generally north of the Highway 84 corridor, with low 60s along and southeast of Highway 84. For tonight, temps will be quite chilly again with temps bottoming out. Expecting a majority of the area to get near or just below freezing outside of immediate coastal zones. Temps are expected to generally range from 30-34 degrees over the inland areas, with upper 30s to low to mid 40s closer to the immediate coast. Some upper 20s might even creep into our far interior counties tonight. The only other noteworthy item tonight is expecting patchy frost once again over much of the CWA. Heading into Thursday, our cold spell begins to come to a close and we begin the journey back to some anomalously warm weather. Currently, expecting highs on Thursday to reach the low to mid 60s for most locations. The main forecast challenge on Thursday will be dewpoints. This is due to our surface high shifting east of the area through Thursday afternoon. Generally expecting dewpoints to range from the upper 20s to low 30s across most of the area given decent vertical mixing through the early afternoon. The only exception will be areas across southeastern MS into far southwestern AL and the FL panhandle, where dewpoints are expected to remain a little higher (upper 30s) as moisture begins to advect back in across that area. The forecast reflects this with dewpoints several degrees higher in those areas for Thursday. By late Thursday afternoon and through the end of the period, with the surface high shifting further east and flow shifting to more east-southeast across the rest of the region, expecting dewpoints to slowly rise across the CWA. Low to mid 40s are expected by the end of the period across southeastern MS into far southwestern AL and the FL panhandle, with mid to upper 30s expected elsewhere.
