840 FXUS64 KHGX 061733 AFDHGX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX 1133 AM CST Sat Feb 6 2021 .AVIATION [18Z TAF Issuance]... IFR conditions perhaps with some light drizzle to open the period, particularly near the coast, but will see improvement through the afternoon from north to south with VFR emerging with weak frontal passage. Front will also veer northeast/east winds to west later in the afternoon. By evening, expecting clouds to scatter across the area, with winds becoming northwesterly and a bit stronger, still generally 10 kts or less. VFR tomorrow. && .PREV DISCUSSION /Issued 540 AM CST Sat Feb 6 2021/... .SHORT TERM [Today through Sunday]... Widespread stratus/low clouds to start off the weekend as a weak surface low over the Coastal Bend lifts a warm front northward into the LA/MS area. Forecast soundings suggest a strong inversion and a well-saturated 925:850mb layer persisting through mid afternoon; therefore, cannot rule out some isolated light rain/sprinkles. An upper-level disturbance will move north of the region today, dragging a cold front across the forecast area this afternoon. Breezy west to northwest winds are expected along and behind the front, especially over the Brazos Valley. Gusts around 15 to 25 mph are expected. Drier air will quickly filter in behind the boundary, leading to clearing skies from west to east by late afternoon/early evening. CAA, light winds and mostly clear skies will lead to another cold night. Overnight lows will range from the mid 30s (far inland) to mid 40s (coast). Sunday looks like a picture perfect day with a surface high pressure dominating the region. Dry airmass, light winds, and sunny skies are expected with highs mainly in the 60s. 05 .LONG TERM [Sunday Night Through Saturday Night]... Partly to occasionally mostly cloudy skies can be expected Sunday night through Monday night as high pressure moves off to the east. With this onshore flow, look for warmer temperatures to come back to the area with inland highs back into the 70s on Monday. The next cold front will slowly sag into the area on Tuesday and will bring some cooler temperatures back to the region. This front should linger somewhere near/along the coast until a stronger front moves through on Thursday. With these fronts in the area and mid/upper level disturbances moving across the area, expect periods of rain in the Wednesday through Thursday night time period. At this time, it looks like the coldest temperatures will hold off until Thursday night as the area begins to dry out. Some models/soundings indicate some support for possible frozen precipitation for parts of the area on Thursday night before the drying occurs, and we'll continue to watch how the models handle this over the next several days. Stay tuned. We are currently carrying a dry forecast Friday night through Saturday with lows in the 20s/30s and highs in the 40s. 42 .MARINE... Periods of elevated winds and seas can be expected over the weekend as another cold front moves through the area this afternoon. An onshore flow returns Sunday afternoon through Sunday night and then persists through the middle of the upcoming week. An offshore flow comes back to the area with the passage of a stronger cold front on Thursday and brings elevated winds and rough seas back to the area through the end of the week and on into next weekend. 42 && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
